In my first season with Dynamo Dresden (german regionals), they had some prearranged friendlies against some Bundesliga teams - stadium was almost sold out every time, and the income from friendlies accumulated to almost 1,5 million euro.
Unfortunately, all those teams declined invitations for further friendlies the years after....which makes me think that the prescheduled friendlies are somewhat strange.
I noticed if I try to select some lucrative friendlies I get turned down. So, in my current season I decided to let the ass. man arrange them. Surprise, surprise, Celtic and Southhampton made visits to Stair Park for friendlies, which generated a nice pre-season revenue. Try letting the ass man set them up and you might see some nice results.

Agreed. It takes all I've got to scream at the little blobs on the screen to mark their men. I can't be bothered trying to arrange friendlies anymore
Aye, can't be arsed to arrange friendlies myself. One season however my assistant (as well as all of the cpu managers) failed to arrange any friendlies and I didn't notice it until a few days before the league started. I was lucky the opponents were about as fit as a certain fat geordie themselves.
Money isn't all that great from friendlies, even if you manage to sell out, the ticket prices are much lower.
