This raises an intersting side topic; assuming you can keep youths on r asonable contracts, how long do you tend to give them before deciding they are rubbish? I don't really trust the coach assessments too much. The problem is I am now getting 8-10 youths every season, which can really jack up the wage bill, so I tend to give them one year and look for signs of life. Then I always wonder if I released a future international star. Anyway, I usually end up keeping only 2-3 out of the batch of youths for more than a season, then on one year deals until they get to be 18, then it fish or cut bait time. Still, I always wonder...

I've had 4-5 youth products in my SPL Ross County side - they've performed well in the Champions League too so they certainly can and do come through if you give them time and games.

I tend to leave my kids in the youth side for as long as their eligible, unless they are just class, then I move them back and forth from all three sides, usually getting them senior games in the cup matches, and spending half their time with both the youth team and the reserves.

If they're marginal, then I just leave them playing in the youth side until they graduate, then I re-evaluate after they get a bit of time with the reserves.

Tim,

I'll give my youths 2 seasons after generation to prove they have quality. That is, unless I see they lack work rate and determination, then I can them because its almost a surety you'll never see there potential no matter how good it is.

I started giving one kid 1st team matches in the EPL at 16 once, though just a taste. He was class, and it was my first year in the EPL, so anything that could keep me up was fair game at the time. But he's 18 and a regular now. We'll see if it burns him out or not.

I work on the same lines as you two. Got a good rotation going, but it does help if you have an active Reserve team playing as well.

Spain is one big pain...Arranging all those week day friendlies just so your players on the outer limits at least get to know what a football looks like.

Normally I give youngsters the odd game, covering injuries and suspensions, and play them in the ass-sucking Cups.

We signed a 16y/o DL, he slipped into the team almost unnoticed and hasn't missed a game since. Always fit, even at about 97% on a Saturday after a Wednedday game, and never been jaded.

He's the exception though.

Wonder why I posted this?
