One of the hardest league and Sevilla seems to be over achieving. Everyone is going all Wenger, Mourinho and Ajax System but what is special with Sevilla this season? I watched them play last night and looked at thier tactics. Looks 4-4-2 but the wingers and strikers push up field like a 4-2-4. They won 4-2 away against Levante (Levante's set piece is the best ever I have seen in any league yesterday and tats where they got thier goals) on counters attacks and an own goal by Levante. They played defensive which seems to be the current trend with FM 7.0.1 and counter attacking but not long ball. Very low defensive line and quick tempo. Thier full-backs seem very aggresive so I would suspect high closing down. Any more observers? Did they play this way because Jesus Navas was absent?
Been watching them for a while. Normally they're a bit more offensively, but generally you're right. It's not an all-out attack style like ie. Barca...
When they play their strongest 11, they rely heavily on Christan Poulsens defensive work AND his ability to change the play with a precise long range pass, usually to one the wingers or to Kanoute with his back towards goal. With Navas on the pitch, they benefit a lot from the 'fallout' created by Kanoutes strength, as Navas starts sprinting the second Kanoute recieves the ball...
It's not beatifull, and it's looks VERY simple, but it's extremely effective because of the quality players they have in certain key positions, including both wingback positions.
It's allmost like a mix between the classic German disciplined style of defensive team play, AND the classic Wimbledon style. Add a little extra technique down the flanks, and there you have it!
After seeing them play and reading on thier system, it seems the highlight are how the full-backs influence the game. Alves seems to be a key to thier game. I won't dare to try fiddle around with my full-backs in FM the way Juande Ramos does. They used two DMC style central midfield didn't they.
Hmm, I'm looking to start a new game now I've conquered all with the toon with my tactic that sounds very similar to your description FourThreeThree.
I play a flat 442 with wingers making runs to FR/L so pretty much 424 in possession and rely on a high pressing game played at a relatively quick tempo and low normal D-Line with aggressive fullbacks.
If I remember correctly their central midfielders would suit it down to the ground to, i.e they have at least 2 players who sit and spray the ball about.
Alfaro played the Navas role. It was good to see him after reading so much about him. Sevilla has been as good as anyone at developing skilled attacking players.
