I have a serious issue with some of the people that complain about the game in this forum (btw – this will relate to tactics eventually I promise so don’t worry). I can see an argument for people who say they are not as tactically astute as some of the more experienced and skilled players on this forum but lets just get a little bit of perspective….
I am by no means the most skilled player of this game but do ok varying between a fair amount of success and periods of struggle. This usually depends on how much luck I have with injuries etc. The trouble with certain people (and I mean no offence) is that they want to win practically every game and get consecutive promotions, which was quite easy to achieve in the old games. This may sound harsh but if you want that, go back to playing the old Championship Manager series, when you could play one formation (mine was the 4-1-3-2, classic lol) and win almost every week with a reasonable to average set of players….
I believe SI have done a fine job with FM 07 in making it a realistic football management experience. The fact that I have to work at my systems and build my squad to gain any success is a very satisfying gaming experience for me, as it makes any major achievement I have feel like it has been earned. People also forget that the more prominent members of this forum go to great lengths of detail to assist other players in terms of tactics and ways of playing the game, so they do understand your plight. They had to learn somewhere as well….
Any comments about this game not being realistic are just idiotic. Football is a difficult game to win at professional level. You have high quality players and managers wanting to win as much as you so yes it is realistic!!!
Finally back to what this forum is truly about TACTICS. I hope you will all forgive me for going into more detail about complaints than tactics but my only advice to less successful players is the following, I have the most success when:
1.I keep the tactics as simple but as creative as possible.
2.Decide on a system you like and stick to it (tinker now and again to suit)
3.Don’t play crazy formations unless you have truly class players (e.g. 3-3-2-2 lol) or any of that rubbish. 4-4-2 is good enough for me.
4.Individual mentalities count for a lot so do not ignore them.
5.Don’t do opposites (e.g. playing with a lot of width when you adopt short passing – the passes won’t reach the target.
6.Don’t panic when you go behind, stick with your beliefs.
7.and finally – enjoy the game! Play it for the love of football and nothing else!
