Atm im playing a 4-5-1 with a DM and have set passing to short, but my defenders keep booting the ball up to the corner flags, which makes my striker run for it and end up in the corner. Is there anyway i can keep my wingers up there more so that my striker doesnt feel the need to go for the ball, or stop my defenders from just booting the ball away? Any other suggestions are welcome aswell thanks.
a) Try lowering the SC's creative freedom setting.
b) No, there doesn't seem to be a way to stop your defenders just hoofing the ball forward. Lots of people suggest things that can stop it, but none of them really work.
does direct sometimes make them play longballs? because i didnt realise that my fullbacks had that, ive changed that now and looking to see what happens.
Theoretically direct should make them play more long passes, but in reality the game seems to heavily weight passing for defenders towards the long ball.
Example, I have risen to the dizzy heights of Barca manager. My outstanding back 4 still thump the ball forward just as often as my less talented teams of the past. Even though I have their passing set to about 5, and tempo low, and creative freedom at about 5, and a DMC, and MC's that aren't too attacking so the defenders always have a short option.
Nope, they rocket the ball towards my lone SC, even though he has 3 or 4 players around him.
The alternative to them hoofin the ball up the field (which is probably direct passing instructions from you) is telling them to play shorter passes to closer players...
The downside of this is that your defenders are likely not good at passing and also compounding the problem that you don't really want players standing right in front of your goal to hold the ball much or play dangerous passes to players around them.
Them playing direct is the best solution but if you are upset becuase their hoofing the ball up the field is giving the ball away try giving players up the field such as your strikers lower closing down and no man marking so they are in more space and will have more chances of getting the ball uncontested.
if i have a high closing down will that mean the player will also run after most balls, even if they are defintly going out? cause thats what my striker is doing atm, im gonna try and lower it. ive kind of sorted the defender proplem by putting the passing to short and they have a creative freedom of 1. the other team has only had 1 shot and its in the second half so working well.

Dayle,
See my post above.
Although I agree that even more direct balls will be played with direct passing instructed, the way the game seems to me is that is has a built in bias towards defenders playing unnecessary long balls.

He could try focussing the passing down the wings... the other thing I am thinking is that maybe the striker is being used as a target man which could be another reason they look for him. Or alternatively try designating a target man who isn't the striker and maybe they will aim for him more. Just ideas... may not help.
