Sometimes, if things arent working out for you, its best to just go back to a simple and uncomplicated formation without many complicated instructions to your players.
With that squad, just go for a normal 4-4-2 formation or 4-1-3-2. Play:
GK: Reina
LB: Aurelio
RB: Arbeloa (De Silvestri, if he's developed well)
CB : Carragher
CB : Agger
DM : Mascherano
CM : Gerrard
AML: Fernandez
AMR: Babel
ST : Pandev (on the right)
ST : Torres (on the left)
You might have your FB's doing forward runs and crossing the ball often as well if your main problems are in attack. If your problem is defence then you can look to have the FB's sit back as well. Again, if the problem is defence, play Mascherano who's much better defensively. If attack is the problem, you might want to play Lucas as he's good going forward.
Just dont complicate things too much. Keep it all simple. Play short passing and slow tempo. Play attacking mentality if attack is the problem and normal mentality with counter attacking if defence is the problem.
That squad look fine as is. But where's Alonso?? You shouldnt have sold him, he's a good player. And at LB, wheres Insua? He turns out better than Guilherme
imo.
You might want to get a better CB in the new season. There are so many out there to choose from. Zapata, Richards, Djourou, Samba, Breno, Barzagli, Criscito are just a few examples. Splurge here if you have to. Hyypia is no good anymore and Sevensson is too damn slow. What made you go for him in the first place? Be sure to invest here as your defence really needs some reinforcements. And the guy should be a very good one as well (like the ones mentioned above).
You might want to get rid of either Kuyt or Crouch and get another better striker in. I'd get rid of Kuyt as Crouch is English and will give you the aerial threat if needed. Buy someone like Fred, Briand, Aguero (if you have the cash), Benzema etc. Someone young(ish) and who's already good enough to come in the first team if needed.
Investing in a versatile winger would be a good idea as well. Someone who can play on both wings. Jeremy Menez & Hatem Ben Arfa are two very good ones for this. I'd recommend Menez first but Ben Arfa is great too.
If you have cash left, you might want to spend on defensively stronger full backs. For LB, look at Taye Taiwo and for RB, look at Zaccardo.
Ofcourse all of the investment depends on how much transfer budget you get next season. If you have any left right now, I'd suggest you use it to buy atleast one player if you can.
Also, in that squad, there are only a few people who you should never consider selling. Any of the others, if you get a great offer, dont hesitate to take it. The only ones I would never sell from that list are Gerrard, Lucas, Fernandez, Torres & De Silvestri. All the rest of them are expendable and you can find as good/better replacements. But just make sure that the replacement is willing to come to you before you decide to accept any offer.
For eg:
- For Mascherano, you can get in Veloso.
- For Babel, you can get in Belluschi.
- For Pandev, you can get in Aguero or Fred.
- For Reina, you can get in Agliardi or Frey.
Even Carragher can be sold if you get a substantial offer for him. He's a very good player ofcourse but he's getting old. Best to sell him when he can still fetch you money rather than wait. He'll be 30 in your game. After this year, you wont be able to sell him for any reasonable amount. It might be something which you would never think about irl, but in the game you can replace him with youth who'll just perform better. The game doesnt take experience that seriously as far as I've seen.
Lastly, try to do your transfer business as soon as possible to give your new player as much time to settle in as possible. And make sure you arrange a lot of pre-season friendlies and experiment with different formations there and also to get your players used to it.
It should all work out. Good luck.
