I meant to say I use the assistant filter on my own shortlist... not the player search. I very rarely use the player search unless my scouts are useless and I need to direct them to players of interest.

This will be very useful in the first version of FM too, when the youth teams, and reserve teams get proper competitions, to find potential loan signings at high teams, or promising youngsters you may be able to lure away.

I don't see a problem with scouting competitions. Seems realistic to me.

What a great job that must be, getting paid to watch any football match in a division you want and rate the players. I don't feel so bad anymore for only paying them 80 pounds/wk

OK I've tried this out and in a matter of 2 weeks my scout had rated over 250 players in the Argentinian first division (where I am managing). Not sure if that is entirely realistic

But, at the start of each season you would assess each team in your division, and how good they were, so maybe this sort of scouting could be done once a season to assess the opposition and identify some targets?

It seems a bit too simple to find players this way to be honest. But you can't deny its realistic, because its not like you're travelling around the world.

Are you sure about that? Surely lower division clubs scout players who can't cut it at the top level all the time. I would have thought checking out the reserve games of higher division clubs could be very rewarding.

Am I way off base here? If so, how does this sort of thing really work?

Reserve players for higher division teams can be good targets in my experience, so I'd agree with you sfi.

It looks like scouting competitions is an acceptable and realistic activity.

I am also considering using the player search facilities with the assistant manager filter set, in the positive belief that one day I will have some money to buy a player and maybe sufficient wage budget to pay him.

I intend to scout suitable targets prior to purchase.

IRL you always here about lower league teams signing reserves from premiership or division 1 clubs. So surely scouting bigger clubs reservers help as the youngsters have less chance of making their team

I only use scouting the specified-only league in my own championship. I doubt, that when you send scouts to a foreign country you tell them which divisions to scout anyway. And it is hard to compare a difficulty of let's say Serie C2B and Croatian 2nd div. Therefor it cannot be judged with rule your level or lower only.
