I don't quite know why in CM 03/04 you don't pay trialists anything unless it adds to "Other" expenses or something.
In CM 01/02 if I remember correctly you had to pay £200 p/w for each trialist so you had to be careful about not just offering a trial to anyone you find.
As far as finding players to offer trials to in the first place goes, I do sometimes use the Player Search function (not Find though of course) because as far as I remember they are listed as "well known players and those within your area" or somesuch so I think it is realistic enough that you would know of their existence. I understand why lots of people don't use that though and in most case I just get my scout to look for youth players and go from there since the frees in the main player search are usually ones who wouldn't come to my club anyway!

Precisely that's the reasoning I'm using, some of the attributes are greyed out, so you still need to try them out. Where I live, the clubs don't even have enough money to pay the trialists, so these ads in local newspapers are usually the only way people get a chance to play, or they are actually invited to join the clubs after some good performances at school level.
But I can say this much, not everyone comes just like in CM, I once tried to get about 50 trialists to come, 10 of these said no.

In all honesty those same guys are looking for a dose of realism right now, the goal right now among the senior members on the tac boards is to identify those facets of the game which are detracting it away from realism. I won't go into any details, but some tactics are so unrealistic and when they work something needs to be done. Everyone is after realism in one form or another. They just want to make the game play realistically. I have to admit if I can get Stoke to clobber Real Madrid in their second season in the premiership something is wrong. I'm not that good a manager. |

Give the T&T crowd some credit for working out all the details about the engine (and its flaws). In the long run their input probably helps making the game more realistic (and online games with non-LLaMas more enjoyable). Obviously I wouldn't want to spoil the game for myself but I'm glad somebody does it.

Even with out of contract players, i only look at ones my scouts have found. Then, unless they have really good stats, i won't sign them, i offer them a trial first. Only if my coaches think they look good will i actually sign them.
I even use the trial option for players going for little or no fee from other clubs after scouting them.

They do a useful job in pointing out where the tactics are unrealistic and therefore making the game engine better.
However, I don't want to know what the flaws are |

Far be it from me to get involved, but I think I may have found a realistic use for the 'search' function. Which is:
Surely if you are a real-life manager in England, it would be possible via agents, scouting network and so forth, to find out about out-of-contract players generally knocking about.
I find that by typing 'No Club' in the 'club' field in the search menu, I get what could be considered a random selection of players kicking about looking for a game, easy to achieve for a real life manager with an ok scouting network and a club anywhere in the league, inevitably besieged by trialists.
Just a theory!
I usually stay well away from the 'search' menu, unless I've previously discovered a player within that .sav, and I want to find him with minimum fuss. But I couldn't help but look for ways in which it could REALISTICALLY be applied. Opinions? Iajafer particularly, as I know you're a bit of a hardliner.....

Arfff...
T&T just rips apart the game's gentle nature and loudly proclaims it as poof-hurting!!!
Rightly so does the GPG. |
