Just realized I forgot my main point:
Should that selfish striker who scored but did nothing else all game be getting a rating of 9 or 4?

9. He did what he was put on to do.
Lets look at a real life example. How many people are saying "Get off the Liverpool number 10's back. He may not have scored for a million games, but look at all the nice passes he made yesterday"?

Depends on your philosophy with regard to playing positionally or giving due attention to teamwork, I'd say.
I'm often to be heard screaming at the top of my voice, "Pass inside, man!!! He's free!!!" while the dick of a striker goes it alone and misses a team opportunity to go ahead.
That dick becomes a hero, however, if he scores instead.
As for your point about a 9 or a 4, I don't really know

I do a lot of that yelling too!
I think he should be getting a 6. He scored after all so was above average in my eyes, but didn't influence the rest of the game enough to warrant better. Thus I feel the ratings need a little tweak.

What influences a game more than scoring a goal?
Or am I missing something?

Agreed. However, what is normal for your striker?
If scoring once in 10 games is normal, then the fact that he scored means he had a good game for him, so he's worth a good rating.
If my striker who's banging in goals every match gets one , but does bugger all else, hasn't he had a pretty average game by his standards? After all he does that every week
I think we're agreed that scoring>not scoring though
Sure I like my strikers to pass, but given a choice I'd rather them score
I'm unshamedly hypocritical though as I scream at the computer screen, yelling at players to square it and don't try to cut infield since the last 17 times he tried it he lost the ball so he cuts in field and blasts in from an infeasible angle and I'm punching the air and telling him he's a god :p

Exactly. If he's scoring every game I don't really care if he gets a 1, tbh.
What puzzles me is that the match engine doesn't seem sure what rating to give the guy.
Another thing that should matter in a striker's rating is the manner of the goal he scored. If all he did was stand still in the area and score from a rebound, then he shouldn't deserve a good rating. Same goes for converting a penalty.
If he dribbled past 2 defenders and scored a screamer, why not get an 8? Though i reckon he should be involved in team passing, participating etc.
One of my strikers was on the pitch for 20 minutes:
passes: 0, tackles: 0, headers: 0/1, runs: 0, offsides: 2, shots: 1, goals: 1, rating: 7.
And before anyone asks, someone else's shot hit the crossbar and fell to him, 10 yards out with the goalie stranded.
