One thing that I don't understand is why aren't these countries separate identities when it comes to the Olympics?

it has to do with the Scotland FA being one of the oldest football associations in the world, maybe?

in Football there's nothing like "countries". FC Bayern Munich almost started to play in the Italian Seria A (they were given permission) due to some stupid lawsuits that were filed against them in Germany.

There will never be a Rule Britainia, or Scotland the Brave played at an Olympics which is wrong.

Not cricket, the MCC play as the England test cricket team and pick from all the counties. Welsh and Scottish players play. There is a separate Scotland 1 day side but their best player has played for the MCC in test matches.
