There is some small problem. There is _NO_ other kind of football. That what yenks play is just a lighter version of rugby. That is it.

Oh yeah, BTW, I almost forgot... Welc_O_me to the LLM

There are plenty of kinds of football:

American football, Canadian football, Aussie rules football, Gaelic football ...

Quit being so precious. It's like the tired old subject of calling it soccer or football. Its just a word. Here in the USA, say football and everyone thinks you mean American football, get it? So now we have to change years and years of cultural and linguistic indoctrination just to make you happy?

Yes!, we had the name first and you have no right to misuse it.

I don't mean it, I am a fan of American Football and love it when I get to see it in the States (and I call it football there). I have also played both Gaelic and Aussie Rules.

What in God's name is Canadian Football though?

It is very similar to American football. The field is a bit larger, they have a 55 yard line and deeper endzones. They hve an extra player on the field and can score a point (called a "try") by punting the ball through the opposing end zone.

From the standpoint of player quality, the Canadian product is inferior to the NFL, but there have been a few players who played in Canada and later came to the NFL and had very good careers.

If they're using those hockey sticks like some ice hockey players i've seen do, I won't be a follower of that sport for some time yet :thdn:

Canadian Football is much like reddbaron described. 12 players, larger field, and only three downs instead of 4 are the big differences. Due to there being only 3 downs, there is more passing, and the larger field means more room and more scoring. The avereage score of a CFL games is greater than NFL.

I didn't know that a punt through the endzone was a try, we just call it a single point. You can also score singles off of missed field goals and downing the ball in the endzone.

There are no "fair catches" in the CFL, meaning all punts must be returned (a little tougher than the NFL).

The motion rules are different too. Players can start towards the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped. Looks a bit like the start of a regatta.

Some good players have started in the CFL (Garcia, Moon, Flutie) but the quality of player is definately inferior. I'd love to see NFL players playing the CFL game.
