The size of the database seems to make a big difference with the speed of the game. however, decreasing the database will make it harder for scouts to find players, especially in 03/04. I have a slower machine and use a small database with England only from conference to PL, at first I found it hard to find players but a couple of seasons in and it is not so much a problem.
With your machine specs you should be able to run medium fairly well this will give you a reasonable number of players.
Some have discussed the use of .ddt files which can allow you to retain all players from a specified country hence helping your smaller database, however it is a type of editor and editors are evil and spawn of the darkside which we shant go near.
I hope this helps.

I can't tell you how many would be best but from what I have heard database size is more likely to slow things down than number of leagues. give it go and see how you do. Sorry can't be more help.

I am currently running a game:
- large database
- 4 countries (Denmark, Norway(FG), Sweden, Finland) with lowest leagues loaded.
on computer:
- Pentium III 866 MHz
- 512 MB SDRAM
...
It runs with mediocre speed.

I think that many people get wrong idea of the game speed when they start the game, as the first two months are really slow, in England that is. But when you get past august things start to go smoothly.
As for the Db size, it's really the number of players that matters most. I got 60000 players in my game with 18 countries selected on medium Db, and it was again *slow* at beginning, but now at december it's flying.
This is with P4 3,3Ghz 1gig ram.
And for the Db sizes, large retains all players from selected nations regardless of selected divisions. So with England that means 10000 players and Italy 15000. I guess with 1.8G machine some 25000-35000 should be max to ensure smooth gaming.

My decrepit thingy is way below supposed the minimum specs anyway, so the speed at which it tar-crawls is something I'm not going to complain too much about.
But yeah, what Kfoolmoon said.

Spot on. Once the transfer window closes, the game increases speed ten fold.

Ah, great news! I was almost giving up on my newly started England game because of the slow pace. The only positive thing that has come out of it is the limited effect a spontaneous drunken management session had: i only played two games before i decided that a drunken BBC Food watching session was more interesting than waiting for the computer to process data
Oh, and don't ask about the choice of tv-channel, i was drunk and it just happened
