It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Mixed passing and tempo

I have read various threads on here and everyone mentions direct passing with quick tempo and short passing with slow tempo.

But no one seeems to mention mixed passing with mixed tempo. I personally find it effective when I take over at a new club and sort of want to give them the freedom, and to prove to me they are good enough. But I dont think it can be effective unless you have good individual players.

I just was wondering what your experiences with this are and what sort of players adapt to it better.

Any feedback would be great thanks.

Ive found mixed tempo/passing is only usefull in 2 situations

1) your team is rubbish and lowskilled
2) your team is intelligent and highskilled

with the 1st case, your team just wont be good enough to succesfully manage a whole match with good passing/heading etc

in the 2nd case, your players will have the awareness to choose which is the best option at that time in the game.

at least this is what ive noticed down in 2nd div .....

I really don't buy the "inextricable link" betwixt passing and tempo sliders that's suggested in the manual. I really don't think it's that simple.

I've used varying systems now, and found a high tempo much more effective with short passing (in the Premiership) than low.

I agree. Take Arsenal IRL, they play a short passing game but it is high tempo. It relies on intelligent movement off the ball, 1-2's & triangles ect. Also counter-attack is a big part of their armoury, they will move the ball forward quickly but with short passing not direct, which is what the manual tells us to do when we are playing counter attack tactics.
Short passing & slow tempo is what you would see in Italian football.

I can't think of any premiership clubs that play a slow tempo but the many of the best clubs favour short passing.

I think you guys are spot on in many cases, but the key element here is quality, you really need quality players to get away with a high tempo short passing game. I seriously doubt Oxford can pull it off no offense...

Would you all agree that if you were a poor team such as Elgin City, the best way to play would be mixed tempo and mixed passing, or is there another way?

I find that direct/quick works really well at that level.

I would personally- but if mixed is working for you then don't touch it. There are so many ways of playing this game and so many different approaches.
