It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default I actually have tears in my eyes...... I need you.

Hi guys. I have been playing solidly for two weeks with Middlesbrough, all night sessions with red bull etc(Don't worry I'm not obsessed-just a student).

I have had some success, won the league and champions league but never playing the great football that I craved and not being consistent enough. I have re-started numerous times (always with Boro) and now play beautiful football but there is one problem that I just cannot overcome........CONCEEDING GOALS. No matter what I do I am leaking goals and it is driving me mad (mainly away from home)

I have good defenders so that is not the problem and have had many discussions on this board and have tried the following.........

As it's mainly away from home, this is how I play. A deep defensive line, defensive to normal team mentality and counter attack ticked

All of the back 4 have a defensive mentality and NONE of them have forward runs, creative freedom etc. They are set to close down rarely. I also have a DMF who sits in front and is very defensive.

I have experimented with man marking, tight marking, zonal marking. Away from home I have been advised to have everyone on similar defensive mentalities, tight man marking, counter attack but again, this has not worked for me.

Apart from the things I have mentioned does anyone have any suggestions to what I can do? This is genuinely ruining my life at the moment. Man, I can feel my eyes welling up again. Help.

My take on this would be that you have 5 players with defensive mentality and 5 with an offensive mentality, right?
So there's a whole between these 2 groups of players which the AI exploits. I would make the other 5 players more defensive or the 5 defensive players more offensive to have a more compact group hence allowing less goals.

Hi...thanks for reply.

Those defensive mentalities are only away from home and when this is so the other 5 are also defensive. I never have more than 1 or 2 mentality notches between def, dmf's, mid, att etc so don't think this is the problem.

Do you check on the details of the opposition forwards? They change thier strikers position so thier taller forward center match up with your shorter defender. I am playing Cardiff City and interestingly in an away match against Ipswich I changed my SC(right) who is Martin Posse to SC(left) position. I did this because Ipswich has a very powerful DC but very very slow, De Vos and Posse had 16 acceleration, 15 pace, 17 off the ball and 17 dribble (but 11 finishing, yes he needs to be at the goal line to score) to Jason De Vos's 3 acceleration and 3 pace. As soon as I rotated Posse to head up De Vos, the AI substitutes him with a short but much faster DC.

Yeah used to do that but both my centre backs are equally good in the air and quick so don't need to now. As for college....no!?

Bad idea.

Ttweak it for each person, each match if you want to be succesful. Look at the players you are up against. Are they faster than yours? Tight marking isn't going to work if the attacker is faster with better acceleration. You are going to need to stand off them. Closing down will work ok on your defenders if they have good anticipation, speed, and tackling. It all depends on who they are up against thought.

Do you watch the full match on the 2d screen on a reasonable speed so that you can see what's happening? You really need to identify how you are losing goals, then ask the questions that will solve the problem

ie. the ball keeps getting punted over my defender and the attacker gets their first. how do I prevent that? (very simple example).

It's an understanding of football (not an understanding of champ man) the most people don't seem to have, which really dooms them to failure.

Ok,

I use team setting on everything and just adjust those. The only thing I adjust on individual setting is, all my defendes on tight zonal marking.

I found that if you start giving your team set individual instructions, you get holes all over, keep it to team setting, just adjusting things like Ment, pass, temp, def line, all team on easy tacklng and closing down.

Good luck.
