these types of training should help:
heading = ball control
concentration = defending
positioning/teamwork/decisions = tactics

Make sure also that you have the best coaches that you can afford and allocate them manually rather than using auto-assign.

Will his stats go up to 15+ with this custom training? I don't want to waste lots of money on him and he doesn't improve much.

From my experience, VDB can only play positions which are VERY clearly defined. Eg. RB with forward runs on rarely, or AMR with no defensive duties. He really does well when you use him like that, but he's never going to be a foraging RB that can get back when he needs to.
I'd say his ideal position would be AMR in a very attack minded team.

I use him as a DRC in my arsenal squad playing alongside toure and he is immense in that position. After first season his value doubled and he became a wonderkid. Also won Young player of the month award 6 or 7 times through out the season
I found that auto assign worked fine for improving his stats but then again ive got world class coaches at arsenal

| Well what do his stats look like? I have my coaching up to 5 stars, and i still doubt his marking will go up to 15.

no matter how good your training is,his positioning,concentration will always be under 10,he's reached his peak for me and his positioning-7,concentration-6,marking-11....try playing him as a winger,he's quite immense at attacking

You could always draw up a customised training regime for him. I did the same for Philippe Senderos (I like pace in my centre-backs) and it worked a treat- took a while though.
I don't know his attributes, but from the sound of it intensive tactical and defensive training would help. You'd be surprised how much of an increase intensive training can bring over the course of a season or two- just be careful the overall workload isn't too high.
