I am definitely coming to the conclusion that it is too easy to get new jobs with patch 5. Take this as an example (and this is not bragging, I know I am crap at this game, nor is it the start of an update saga).
Season 1. Start LLMing with Woking in the Conference. Manage to staunch the drain of cash and bumble away to mid-table respectability by 3/4 of the way through the saeason. There is no reasonable chance of making the play-offs. I had refused a couple of unenticing job offers.
Then : Luton (D2) offer me a position. A quick look at the table tells me they are 5th from bottom - not good. However, closer examination reveals that they are 10 points above the drop zone. Worth a gamble as even if they do drop I will still have gained a division. Anyway, with a bit of luck, I maintained their D2 status. My reward was an increase in transfer money to £60,000. I have never had that sort of budget in my life.
So, I set about rebuilding on expectation for a long hard slog next season. Then, just before the start of the season (and after I had just been wiped out in 2 friendlies), Partick Thistle (SPL) decide they want me as manager.
So, that is where I am now. 4 games into season 2 doing OK in the SPL.
Now, what do we have 1 season rookie conference manager who does nothing exceptional then ends up managing a SPL side the next season by being offered (not applying for, note) progressively higher jobs. Now, this either says something about Luton and Partick Thistle or tells me that it is too damned easy to get new jobs in this game. Has anyone ever had such a meteoric rise?
(of course, I could screw up at Partick and end up back knocking on the door for conference jobs - c'est la vie)
I always refuse the offers I don't feel I have earned with my performance and sometimes I also refuse the ones I feel I have earned because I want to take the team to their roof-limit. :p
Anyway, it's your game, play it as you enjoy it... *shrugs*
Career like a meteor? It's a bit of a misnomer. Meteors appear to be high-fliers and then some hit the earth with a bang, while others will fade into nothingness
One might say as well that other than the Old Firm and a couple others, the you moved fairly laterally going from the English Second to the Scottish Premier. Reputation wise, Patrick Thistle isn't going to hire high-flying English managers. And Luton isn't a chop liver rep club for the 2nd div. Actually, they'd probably be happy to get what you were in the game, an up-and-comer with a decent record.
I have to agree with the Dark one as well, it's easier to "flame out" with big name clubs in 03/04 than previously. Especially since you're probably taking them on the downward slope, or when they're loaded with those 35 year old yesteryear players who get injured in boatloads when you see them.
