My Dad was a wise man..We came over in 1967, and I asked Mom later on why did we leave Britain. She said Dad could see the writting on the wall, and that he reckoned in 10 years it would be a **** hole, and he didn't want his family to grow up there.
I look at the tales of unemployment, race problems, and general carpness through these boards and I can see how right he was.

Each to their own Taips...I'm sure all those Britain-bound Eastern Europeans might disagree.

Whatever it was that made Britain Great is well and truly down the pan now.

I know where you're coming from, but I don't think that anyone can really justify pouring taxpayer's money into a big black hole in the ground (almost literally in this case).
It's sad, but you can't support something that's economically unviable forever.
[edit] Iskra, I'm pretty much as anti-EU as they come, but your comment above is way off the mark.

Undeniably true seamus, however, jaffas point was that the effects were harsh on entire communities, ruining peoples lives and essentially changed the nature of Britain as a result. Its sad that economics doesn't take into account the devastating psychological and social effects the break-up of the staple industries had in these areas...this might be one for off-topic thread before this update thread is ruined with unrelated rhetoric. BTW, KUTGW Ian B!

I'm not actually anti-EU, I made the comment tongue in cheek but couldn't be bothered with smilies to reiterate. I do believe its a misguided constitution though. I realise that the fear of an Eastern European flood is exaggerated. My point was that whilst Taips is happy in Oz, a number of Eastern Europeans will be finding the '****hole' of Britain somewhat favourable (at least in economic terms) when compared.

Erm, Mr Bauer, you may want to post another update at this point, the thread appears to be skewing alarmingly off course!
I was in Porthcawl on Sunday, lovely view of the Port Talbot steelworks to the North....
