So I started a new game the other day, and took over TSV Eintracht Braunschweig. The German Regional League has all sorts of fun player requirements. Match squads have to have 6 German U-24s and 2 German U-21s. So I do a little check of the squad at the beginning of the season and see that I have a 19 year old and 6 21 year olds in my squad. That ought to work, right? Well, to be safe, one more gets loaned in anyway.
The season goes on, and I've won the North Region and earned promotion, I only have 3 weeks left, it's May 15th, and I select my match squad, and get the message "Your match squad must have 2 U-21s, currently 1."
So I look for another sub to use. Unfortunately, all my subs are 22 and above. Seems the last one had his 22nd birthday that day. Loan season was closed, and the only players left below 22 were "grey" players, and I couldn't use them in the squad.
So now I couldn't finish the season for lack of available players. Guess it's my fault for not checking birthdays closely enough. Though the odds that all 6 players would turn 22 before the season ended? Ouch.
sounds an interesting challenge to me, maybe i'll start my next game there... should be good fun if i can ever get some free time to fire up cm for a decent session!
Stupid Germans - it shouldn't matter. IIRC if someone qualifies for their national U21 team at the start of the season then they are a valid player for the season, irrespective of when they turn 22.
And that's what I thought too, that if they qualified at the beginning of the season, they'd be qualified throughout. It seems like a wierd application of the requirement, IMHO. But I could be wrong.
Guess I could've taken holiday the rest of the season, as I'm sure the AI would've gotten around it. But it was 2am when I ran into this, and I was more than a little frustrated, so my "solution" was a little more...destructive.
Just a hint: a "no player" is definitely younger than 21. So if you are missing a player who fulfills the requirements, and don't have anyone to fill up the spot, leave the spot empty. You'll have a disadvantage, being one player short on the bench, but you'll be able to play the game.
From the perspective of developing prospective talent in English football, this sort of set up for conference and third division sides would be interesting; after all, look at the impact that ex-Huddersfield youngster currently at Blackburn has had so far. If more opportunities for youngsters to showcase their talent were available, at least in the lower division, I think it would benefit the national game. As for the dilemma shawng1, sounds like a total bummer.
