Law 11 means you can be dismissed for obstruction if it denies a goal scoring opportunity.
A player is sent off if he commits any of these 7 offences, one of which is 'denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the players goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or penalty'.
Obstruction, or 'impeding an opponent' is of course punishable by an indirect free kick.
So I hope you never 'just give a penalty to make things easier' in front of an assessor!
