MFCMARK...i meant from the situation that was described i would probably have given a penalty, but accurate detailing of the rules would change my mind. As referees it is our prerogative to change our mind

In my 31 year experience of watching all grades of Association Football, I'd come to believe that Refs generally made up the rules as they went along

What buggers me about this is that if the offence was good enough to get him sent off it should also be enough to grant a penalty

As far as I understood, obstruction in the penalty area is an indirect free-kick.

hehe ill just get into this debate too!

I am also a referee though only in Australia :p

Obstruction is a indirect free kick offence but im sure when its in the box its a penalty....and after watching about 5-8 years of soccer all over the world i have never seen an indirect free kick given in the box for obstruction but a penalty i have!

Oh no i stand corrected:

Looking in Law 8 under special circumstances and i quote:

"An indirect free kick awarded to a attacking team in its opponents' goal area is taken from the goal area line at the point nearest to where the infringement occured"

Though i have never seen it happen myself!

Cobbler thankyou you alerted to me how wrong what i wrote was...teaches me for doing an english assignment while on a forum!

Penalties are only awarded for any foul punishable by a direct free kick inside the penalty area!

If an indirect free kick occurs in the penalty area it is moved back to the penalty line but if it occurs in the goal area the ball is moved back to the goal line!

Hope that makes more sense and what i MEANT/SHOULD have said!

by goal line don't you mean the edge of the six-yard box? Otherwise it sounds to simple ol' me that it'd be a nightmare to defend!!
