Yes, considering how quickly AFCW appears in the Conference I think that the RL league matters less (if at all) than the reputation. If I would venture a guess I'd say they use some dodgy formula like the higher the reputation the greater the probability of promotion to the conference.
It's not a spoiler, I'm just guessing.

In CM4 this isn't quite as fun as in past CM versions. Since scouting sucks so bad, unless you have a fair amount of transfer funds, building a team is difficult. But if you like playing with grays, then have at it.

Also as good in CM01/02 was when a promoted club had to expand the ground to allow entry into the Conference, so you started with a crap squad, and about £500K+ in debt.
My favourite ever English team in CM has been Heybridge Swifts, who I managed for 18 seasons, finally reaching the CL final twice, but losing both times to Juventus.
Also had some memorable spells at Sutton United, Croydon, Hampton and Richmond, Atherstone United, Harrow Borough, Lancaster, and Bath City.

I've seen both Slough and Leek promoted to the Conference in CM 01/02 but neither of them were in one of the leagues directly below the conference in the 01/02 season IRL.

Leek were, it was the season they got relegated to Unibond 1. They're a localish team and are covered in The Sentinel, our local newspaper.
I'm presuming Slough were too, though I don't know on that one.

Didn't know that, must be why i've never seen a team promoted to the Conference in CM 01/02 with a stadium smaller than 3500.

I'm at Newport County, capacity 3300 with 1236 seats. Joined at the start of my current season when they had been promoted to the Conference for the first time (2027)

It seems in CM4 many of the non-league teams have quite a large number of players. All the teams promoted to the conference in the second and third season had a full roster (full of cräp of course). Thats using the large database, maybe that's why. And yeah, they're all in debt and have rather large stadiums, but I didn't check them before they got promoted, so I don't know if the promotion had anything to do with that.
Btw, Canvey did get promoted this season but they still have a manager, looks like I have to wait for them to get nearly relegated. Maybe I should just wait for Chelmsford making it to the conference. I set them as my favorite club hoping that would improve their chances but so far no luck.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that in my game they played their home cup games in an unknown stadium in front of 25,000+ fans.
AFCW are quite suspect in CM4 and you'll probably have an unfair advantage if you choose to manage them. But I don't know, maybe some of the people here who actually manage them can shed some light.

Oh and by the way, it's almost a bit embarassing to ask, but what does the A in AFC stand for? Amateur? Alternative? Adult? (uh no, pictures nude football players on the pitch and throws up). Altruistic? (they try to lose every game ). But seriously, I really don't know.
<= not british so please excuse the ignorance

Athletic, perhaps? I would imagine association though.
It reminds of when The fat pie-eating Gordie was at court in Scotland. The judge asked what kind of footballer he was, Association or Rugby? I'm sure he answered. "No, soccer"

There's definitely some sort of minimum requirement, from about 3000-3300 or so. Whether you need x amount of seats I don't know.
The other little quirk I've noticed in CM01/02 (dunno about CM4) is that any stadium with either less than 1500 capacity, or capacity not set to anything (shown by a - symbol) will be automatically upgraded to 1500 as soon as you take over. Seen it in Spain, Finland, and Wales.
