Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Can short team passing work with a deep defensive line?

I ask this because int eh manual it says long passing can be afforded deep defensive line, as passing comes from deep and go long.

Does this mean short passing has to work with a line at least on normal?

You should be able to play a short slow passing game with a deep defensive line effectively. It has worked just fine for me as long as I have done one of two things. Either play with a DM who can link defence and midfield or play with a low global mentality.

dline only kicks in when you don't have the ball, so it's pretty irrelevant from a passing point of view.

Not really imo, I tend to consider where players will be when the oppositions attacking move breaks down as the transition from defending to attacking is very important to me. If I am looking for my team to play a short passing game I dont want my midfield to far away from my defence when we regain possession.

I just think that by the time you win the ball back, the midfield will have caught up to the quickly retreating defence.

i built my own tactic for notts

4-4-2

defenders are set on midpoint of deep (5?)

does quite well considering thier general ineptitude

The manual says that if you use deep dline it is best implimentet with defensive midfield mentalities as well or maybe a DMC so you dont have those gaps between defence and midfield.

Especially if I play short i use mentalities in midfield on at least one player, same as d-line. So if I have d-line on 4-6 I have a midfielder on 4-6 as well.

I'm playing short team passing in my current Fiorentina game with a deep defensive line and two DMCs (Blasi and Donadel.

It's aesthetically pleasing too- my players knock the ball around until the ball reaches my playmaker Montolivo- who then releases one of my wingers or finds my lone gunman Luca Toni up front.

Ok.Thanks for the reply. Some widely diferent views. I found that with short passing if the ball is lost deep the AI can score instantly.

Whereas QUick and long from deep helps avoid giving ball in dangerous area, but u end up inviting pressure.

Ok, Thanks all. Some really different opinions.

Also can short passing work with counter attack effectively? As I found that CA is much more effective with direct passing.Would appreciate replies.
