You should be able to play a short slow passing game with a deep defensive line effectively. It has worked just fine for me as long as I have done one of two things. Either play with a DM who can link defence and midfield or play with a low global mentality.

Can short team passing work with a deep defensive line? Post #3

Not really imo, I tend to consider where players will be when the oppositions attacking move breaks down as the transition from defending to attacking is very important to me. If I am looking for my team to play a short passing game I dont want my midfield to far away from my defence when we regain possession.

The manual says that if you use deep dline it is best implimentet with defensive midfield mentalities as well or maybe a DMC so you dont have those gaps between defence and midfield.
Especially if I play short i use mentalities in midfield on at least one player, same as d-line. So if I have d-line on 4-6 I have a midfielder on 4-6 as well.

I'm playing short team passing in my current Fiorentina game with a deep defensive line and two DMCs (Blasi and Donadel.
It's aesthetically pleasing too- my players knock the ball around until the ball reaches my playmaker Montolivo- who then releases one of my wingers or finds my lone gunman Luca Toni up front.
