Thanks guys! Must admit that my opener was written in pure frustration, after playing Birmingham - and you guessed it - they came back TWICE with the use of 4-2-4.

And it is good to notice that my fellow Football Managers have the same frustration (to a certain degree) as me. And as to solution, I agree with Millie (and others) that using barrows on the full backs could help.

(Problem is that you don't realise that the AI change until it is too late....)

But keep the solutions coming as I doubt SI will do any major changes in this area for the time being.

This is certainly hard to accept, but one thing that probably all of us never consider when this kind of game happens is how often it happens considering the time you spent on the game.

Sometimes we play weeks on minutes, months on some hours, and then things seem to be repeating or that incredible comeback from the poor side seems cheating from the AI. But come on, inside the game you've played months, and one game the poor side managed to do a great game. Only one... I mean, this is totally normal in real life, it is not every game, but will happen sometimes.

Fantastic! Since posting my bit on this issue i have read far and wide trying to find a solution to this.The counter atak seems to work a charm.Slow the game dwn and keep posession.Playing the ball wide and giving a DM some time on the ball seems to work fine.I am now thanks to some very good advice in this thread holding my 1 and 2 goal leadf..and in some cases hittin goals on the counter.One more thing is this.I have never seen anyone ever complain about stupid computer mistakes..thay happen quite a bit.I love this game.And love it even more now it takes some imagination.I will tell u what is really unrealistic.Me in fm06 takin Kidderminster from the conferance to CL champs in 7 yrs.Now that is unrealistic.Now when i win against better opposition i feel i have accomplished something.I am now experiencing what its like to be a manager.4-2-4 is not unstoppable..just takes some football skill now.

You have to be careful when defending against a 4-2-4, as I found out over the weekend.

Playing Man City away (as Fulham) and after reading this thread, have come up with quite a successful way to combat the 4-2-4 ... so Man City came up with a new one which I've only ever seen this once in two seasons, the 2-3-5.

I read somewhere that sticking side arrows on your forwards, focusing passing down flanks, counter attacking and not putting farrows on your wingers means you may get a goal yourself, as the opposition full back will be up against 2 players (an FC and winger) as his winger is too far up the pitch to defend. Thus you are quite likly to get a good cross into the box against a defence that may also have pushed up too far and be fragmented for your other FC.

Actually I remember watching Levante - Barcelona a month ago or two and Barcelona were 1-0. Last 15 mins and Levante went all out and they managed a 1-1 draw.

It happens all the whilse. A good manager would defend but always have a counter attacking option when being 1-0 up in the final 20 mins.

Actully I find when the AI switches to a flat front 3 more difficult to counter than 4-2-4, fortunately when the AI does mostly itis when he is down to 10 men, but Ive still leaked the odd goal compared to 4-2-4 which I never do.

I've honestly never had an issue with this- I could count the number of times I've been pegged back or been beaten late on on one hand in FM2007- at any level. I'm not bragging- I have no idea why it doesn't happen to me as I don't particularly make any changes at the end of the game, I generally only make any necessary substitutions on the hour.

Maybe, but could it be possible that you are playing another game and you haven´t noticed?
