I think it's perfectly expected for a team to attempt to salvage something from a game, but not purely via switching to 4-2-4. As you say, a bit lazy and something I think SI will work on in future.

Ok. I made the following test. I took two different teams to manage: Valencia and Barcelona. Played each other with everything on normal. Barcelona were winning 3-1 and, at 75 minute, went into the tactics screen, and switched Valencia tactic to the gung-hoo version, 4-2-4 very wide, direct and quick, and all-out attack. The success of this system wasn´t even close to the one that AI employs. I am still wondering what exactly setup the AI uses when it switch to 4-2-4...

You know, the CPU does a little more than just push his wingers forward to FR/FL. That's why you can't recreate it just by moving a couple of blobs on the formation screen.

Another point: I think most managers if playing 4-4-2 would want to push their wingers forward to help the attack and throw caution to the wind. I think moving them forward is logical. That's all the 4-2-4 is: 4-4-2 with wingers who are told not to bother tracking back.

Solutions? Varied. I use barrows on the full backs and remove any arrows on my wingers. Wingers are always on man marking. The only other change I make is going into the opposition instructions and telling my players to specifically close down the oppositon full backs who are fond of deep crosses.

Be serious: if you don't change your set up, of course the oppositon will exploit it. That is realistic, regardless of what you might think.

I would assume that you might be able to try the ones located in:

CProgram Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2007\data\tactics

...which don't seem to be ones that I've created, anyway. So I assume someone else must've, though whether the AI uses them is a different matter.
