First of all, I must admit I am not good at all at FM 2007. What I'm wondering is how important are the team instructions? I tend to focus on the individual instructions, but get horrible results.
Is it likely my team instructions could be messing things up?
A further question I'd have would be how important tactics are as a % of your teams success. I've always assumed it to be about 90%, but am I putting too much emphasis on it?
Personally, speaking and I know there is a debate ragin on the boards over this is that :
1. Team Mentality : Affects how a team plays overall
2. Individual : affects how they position on the pitch, there are some who feel that it also affects closing down as well.
Now in the case of mentality, I follow one simple rule and this works all the time for me. When I create a tactic, the only purpose individual mentality serves for me is to position players, and affect how they play. So if a defender has a mentality of 6. Then his position will be akin to the last man if the next defender is 8. Does this reflect exactly on the screen..ie. you get one defender lower than the other...not really...but in terms of how the dots behave yes.
In game if I felt that the team needed to add more pressure to another team....I would maybe consider upping mentality and increasing width.
Yeah but when you do this you need to look at Closing down as well. If your team has very attacking mentality and you are playing wide and you also decide to have high closing down in attack and midfield. Good luck. There is no way this could logically work.
This game is very holistic.
In terms of my team's success, tactics for me play a huge part. But once my team starts to gell then their importance comes down. I can go for 5 seasons without having to cpme up with a new tactic.
I only change tactics cos I got bored playing with the same one, and I start making ridiculous shapes just to entertain myself.
I've been testing that myself recently, and found the same.
When on high defensive team mentality, your players just don't play the ball forward unless the ball is a certainty of reaching the target. On higher team mentality, they will pump the ball forward a lot more, and generally the passes will be of poorer quality (with direct passing anyway).
Test player mentality yourself by turning of forward runs and creative freedom on all players. Set all the players on the left to 20 mentality, and all the players on the right to 1 mentality. The effect is clear to see.

Why not? The only thing I can think of that might cause problems, is that you're closing down a large area due to playing wide, but width only kicks in when you have possession, right?
