I develop my own tactics, always from scratch. There is much more fun this way, and this requires hard work.
I haven't read yet all posts about tactics here, but I guess I'm working on a new approach concerning tactics. Let me tell you.
We can talk about tactics options, sliders, the individuals tasks, etc. We have an idea about what each option means. But we know that the team will not play exactly like we intend when we adjust tactics.
Let me explain better. Imagine we have to shot a far target. Our bullet will pass by wind effects. If wind blows right to left (simply talking), we shouldn't focus exactly on the target. We should focus on some place right to the target, so we have a chance to hit the target.
The "wind effects" in FM is, mostly, the opponent, its players, its tactics.
Sometimes I get an effect asking for mentality 12. Sometimes I get the same effect asking for mentality 5. It's pretty obvious to me that it's NOT the pure instruction that say how players will play. This is because they can TRY to play as what we imagine like a "mentality 12 way of play" yet don't get it. And then maybe I change instructions and ask them to play "mentality 5", and then now they get the "mentality 12 way of play".
For sure, complexity is even larger, because there is plenty of instructions to manage when handle the tactics.
I play almost always watching full match. I use Speed Gear to speed up boring events in match. I see what is happening in pitch and try to tweak instructions in order to get best results. It's very enjoying to see the AI managers tweak its own instructions to change the game in his benefit. Then I have to work again!
Please understand that this is, in some way, an easy approach to the tweaks. You start the match using a reasonable set of instructions to your players. In a few minutes, you may see, e.g., that your opponent has space to drive the ball in your half of the field. You thought this would not happen, because you've put 12 as Pressing. You change to 8. And watch. Now you see your midfielders staying a bit more in his position, and opponent can't pass easy anymore. Pressing 8 fits the way of the opponent attacks. However, be careful. If you change Pressing to 4, maybe they don't pass by your midfielders, but has the chance to do easy long shots.
And see, I'm not saying that "12", "8" or "4" MEANS this things. Remember the shots under wind. You initially thought you should focus, say, "12 meters" to the right of the target, so you could hit it. After the first shot, you hit some meters to the right of the target, so, for the second shot, you adjust and now focus "8 meters", and hit. If you focus "4 meters" to the right, then the shot would hit to the left, wrong place. But all of this applies to that wind. Next wind (next match, in FM case), things will change.
It's not easy to talk about every happening that makes me change something. I'm thinking about writing a guide for this, showing images of the pitch, how I adjust to solve the problems showed, and what happens then.
And yes, i'm doing pretty good! But please give me some feedback about this ideas so I can develop this guide (with which I will go to learning too!).
You are really making a lot of sense. I have been trying to approach the changes in the games in the manner that you have presented, but I am not knowledgeable enough about the game or perhaps even the sport to see the changes that are needed. Your guide would be a wonderful addition to the forum

This is the main problem with people who struggle with the game. They just don't have enough knowledge about football to identify the problems, let alone find solutions. If you know a lot about football, it's translates very easily to tactics etc.
Hector - I completely agree. The main reason for my purchase of the game was to gain a better understanding of the sport. I have learned a lot and continue to seek information on the nuances of the game and sport. Sometimes it is hard to differentiate between what works in the game and what is solid theory on the sport. I'll keep trying.

It wasn't hard to understand. I really think you should appreciate the time and effort a second language speaker has to put in in order to write such a detailed thread and respond in kind rather than writing a cutting off the cuff remark. It is not as if you could do it in Portuguese! The post has been seriously thought out and deserves better.
Obrigado, Paulo Santoro. Keep on updating as you could have a wonderful thread on your hands.
