I've been working on this tactic for a while now.. first started with a diamond and then gave up with that and installed a sweeper into the system. This tactic is very sound at home... using Chelsea I let in only 3 goals in 19 games. The only problems I encounter are with away games, but i've attempted (and so far succeeded) in creating a solution.
The formation is 1 sweeper, 4 defense, 3 midfield, 2 attacker format. The 'attacking' focuses on sending the top 5 and the few defenders to make goals happen. The 3 center defenders (2DC+1Sweeper) focus on keeping everything stable in case of counterattacks.
The defensive one focused on letting the back 5 stay in position and giving no space for the opponent before gathering the ball and creating good counter-attacking chances.
The main players in this format are the sweeper and midfielder. Most all other positions have partners and don't need to be amazing, while the sweeper and midfielder are pretty much alone in their duty.
**Using the tactic**
Some of you might be confused on which tactic to use when... so heres what you look for
First off: Check how many strikers they start the game with. If they play with 1 striker, play attacking. If they play with 2 strikers, check below to determine. If they play with 3 or more strikers (usually in the 80th minute if they are losing), play defensive.
Before game: Pregame expectations (Expected win = attacking; expected lose = defensive); Location (Home game = attacking; away game = defensive) and enemy formation [can be found with scout report as well] (defensive and/or counterattacking tactic = attacking; offensive and/or 3 defenders = defensive).
During the game you should only change depending on what formation they take. If you get scored on, they usually go defensive and this is when you change to attacking. If they are losing and time is running out, they usually employ a 4-2-4 with 4 fowards, where you must play the defensive formation.
Well, this is only version 1, so if anyone sees anything out of place, any settings that can be improved or any other reccomendations please state so. This tactic is meant for higher calibre teams, although with correct tweaking it should work for LLM as well. Let me know how it goes!
Game 1: Ajax vs CSKA Moscow (ECC Group)
I am home and am favorites, but CSKA Moscow are playing with 3 defenders and an extra AM, and I am missing 2 key defenders so I will start out with the defensive tactic. Everything stays the same throughout the game besides substitutes.
Results: 4-0 Win
Game 2: Ado Den Haag vs Ajax (PD)
I am away but am the favorite to win. ADH put up a format with 1 striker and 1 AM, so I begin the game attacking. We go to 2-2 early with two own goals for my team. We are still outplaying them and so I leave my tactic alone blaming my players for us being equal. We wait until the 80th minute to get a goal back. They rotate to a 4-2-4 and so I change to my defensive format. We bag another goal from a counter-attacker in the 87th.
Result: 4-2 Win
Game 3: Ajax vs AZ (PD)
I am home and barely the favorite. They play a 1 striker, 3 AM format and so I decide that since i'm home ill start out attacking and watch closely to possibly change to defensive. At half time it is 0-0 and the commentary states that we are being outplayed by AZ, and they have 4 shots on goal to my one, so I decide to switch to the defensive formation hoping to get away with a 1-0 win. They nab a goal in the 60th minute, so I turn back to the attacking format to hopefully get it back. The plan fails to work as my strikers manage to make a goal out of the 7 shots they had in the 35 extra minutes.
Result: 0-1 Lose
You live you learn... next time ill continue playing attacking and hope my players improve.
Another view playing as AFC Wimbeldon, League 1 in 2010. Expected to come in last place.
Game 1: Swindon vs AFC Wimbeldon
Away, and Swindon are clear favorites. However, my scout report told me Swindon play a counterattacking game, and they lined up in a normal 4-4-2... so I decided to use my attacking formation. No changes made throughout the game.
Result: 3-0 Win
Game 2: AFC Wimbeldon vs Colchester
Home but still not favorites, and my scout report stated they play counterattack football. They line up 4-4-2, so I go attacking. At half time it's 0-0 but were being dominated. I hope to learn from the last Ajax game and keep my attacking tactic on with a few new subs. We play more evenly but nothing develops.
Result: 0-0 Tie
Game 3: Norwich vs AFC Wimbeldon
Away game, "impossible" chances for me, and 4-4-2 counterattacking one again. Seems to be a trend. I try the attacking tactic =] At half time it's 1-1 and were playing evenly. I opt to stay with my attacking formation until they send more forward (they should if they stay tied or go down a goal) before I deply my defensive. I score at the 47th, and they send some farrows and an extra midfielder so I switch to defensive. A red card in the 85th to my MR makes me sub one of my forwards and move him to MR.
Result: 2-1 Win
Game 4: West Brom (CH) vs AFC W (L1) [LeagueCup]
My scout report says they play a 3-5-2 counterattacking and they are heavy favorites at home. They do indeed start a 3-5-2 but I dont believe they'll counterattack vs me, so I use my defensive tactic. Its 1-0 at halftime and im being outplayed, and although expected I decide to attack and attempt to get out of here with a tie. No miracle, and I concede two trying.
Result: 0-3 Lost
Game 5: Bury vs AFC Wimbeldon
Away, Bury are favorites and the scout report says they counterattack. Im currently on better form than them so I use the attacking tactic.
Result: 1-1 Tie
(I lost another 2 players to injury leaving me with only 17 out of my 30 players healthy.. god hates us)
Game 6: AFC W vs Bournemouth
Home, bournemouth are favorites, scoutreport says counterattack. Why does everyone play counterattack football? I play attacking and see what happpens. I totally dominate them but fail to make chances pay. They get one chance in the 90th and score on my 2nd backup goalie.
Result: 0-1 Lose
Aside from injury, my team has no sweeper and I used DMs instead. With a strong sweeper my defense should not leak as much. Once I get some players back, they should help me work on offense as well. Not bad for a relegation team though.
Like the look of the formation, I may give it a go. Respect for admitting your team have lost whilst using this, even given their pre-season expectation. Most people would say the their tactic has led the worst team ever to the top of the league!.
Don't give up on it, a lot of good theory behind it. Injuries suck though!
Which do you think you are getting most success with? Good tema nad good players or do you think you are getting better results for a team whose expectations and quality are not as good?
hi it sounds good but all 3 links are down could you poss post links again using something else, as would love to try it out cos i'm struggling big time.
Dude, I'm going to give this a blast with Newcastle on the xbox 360, however, I cant download the tactics and put them on it, if it's not too much of a pain in the preverbials, cold you explain what to do with regards to the player and team instructions please, cheers

My defending tactic does not work miracles, so I simply increase my chances of an underdog winning but being the favorites with the attacking tactic works best for me. As I said, using Chelsea only 1 lose and very few condeded goals.
