I play pretty much an under 20 team in the first couple of rounds of the cup but even then they struggle - I have my big guns on the bench and had to use Gyan, Anderson and Stancu rescue a cup tie Vs Carlise when it was 0-0 after 70 minutes. So as you can see they are not upto much at the minute.

So how do I make them develop? From what I've read the following things are taken into consideration:

Tutoring: I have good tutors and regularly tutor my youngsters but still no progress

Training: I have the best training facilities in the world and have the highest number of stars (seven I think) in each training section. I even hired extra coaches who had good man motivation, working with youngsters etc just in case that was what I was missing.

First Team football: This is where my main question is. Is it best to keep my youngsters at the club with fantastic training or would it be better to send them on loan to my feeder club King's Lynn who play in the Blue Square North and have rubbish facilities. I've tried offering them out to other teams but nobody bites, least not anyone where they would play regularly. So terrible football and facilities or reserve/youth football and great facilities? Which does the best?

Or is there something that I'm missing. Maybe I'm just impatient but the next Michael Owen really should be half decent by the age of 18 but he's really not!

Loan them out, Them getting first team experience is the most important thing for a young player. They don't care where they get it.

Insanity, you expect a 18 year old to be half decent? not in FM mate. they are rubbish at the age, and will turn only half decent at the age of at least 19

You need to give him some experience, not too much and he should come good at least around 20 years old, if his real quality will turn wonderkid at 19-20. at around 21-22 he will turn quality, 23+ he should have turned worldwide or leading star, so i think you are bit impatient

Do you use any scouting tools? is a good way to measure progress

Have a look at the editors forum, alot of useful tools if you like to use them

Loaning them out is a great way to aid developement, but you do make a good point about the quality of facilities and coaching at lower league level.

However playing competitive matches is, in my opinion, the best way to develope youngsters and if you can't give them a decent amount then you really should loan them out.

In my experience it is best to loan them no lower than 1 division(it is best to keep them in the same country imo). Facilities need to be at least "average" and if you have enough staff loaded then you can have a look at the coaches at the other clubs too.

Always have a recall clause or make the loans shorter term, just incase you don't feel it is working out.

I notice that my young players improve the most when they get some first team action. If I leave them in the reserves, even with top class coaching, facilities and tutoring they don't improve as much as quickly.

slots them straight for first team action is the best way. but not all of them at one time.

prolly 4-5 of them is a good amount depending on the expectation and team as well. crtical area such as ST/DM/DC position i would suggest that you leave one of the senior player there.

note that if your young players keep scoring 5-6 rating it will backfire.

also during the transition season where you know you will be fielding a lot of youngster give the board the lowest expectation so you wont get sacked if you do too badly.

I've seen players aged 21 suddenly show an attribute increase, but in my experience once they hit 22 its time to make a decision. If they are not ready to be a part of your 1st team squad by then, then they most likely never will be.

There are plenty of 17-19 year olds that look pretty crap, but turn out to be very good players. It helps if you can give teenagers some 1st team action, but don't throw them in just for the sake of it, if they are not ready, like a previous post said, it might well backfire.

But doesn't the fact they're training in a tin shed with the the local PE teacher mean while they're getting good experience their training is a waste of time?
Depends where you send them, and that depends on what size game you are playing. Assuming you in the top flight you can request a feeder club which will be half-decent rather than semi-pro/amateur, and if poss make it a smaller club in a league you have loaded. I like to send my youngsters to smaller SPL or Dutch clubs - they get a good level of experience at a professional club and play the occasional "big" game.

Dundee and Hibs are good ones; they get realistic experience plus 8 Old Firm games a season.

Saivet scored 45 one year up there when he was 19.

TRAINING / TUTORING YOUTH PLAYERS:

Age 15-17: The time that players spend in the youth ranks is critical to long-term development. Both logic and my personal experience suggest that the younger a player is, the more malleable he will be. Therefore this is a great age to try and influence a player's mental attributes and personality(whether they are ambitious, determined, etc.) via tutoring.

Have senior players with desirable personalities and good mental statistics tutor your youths. Ideally the tutors should play the same position and be roughly similar in style to the youth player. Tutoring is generally most effective when the tutor is in a youth's "Favoured Personnel", when the youth "Thinks 'X' is a good player", or when the youth is a "Similar type of player to 'X'". However, choosing a player with different but still desirable characteristics can be beneficial and is much less likely to result in friction / personality differences when the pupil is young.

At this age it is also advisable to have several dedicated youth coaches in addition to your normal coaches. If your youth coaches are not your best at training but are good at working with youths, then assign them to oversee multiple schedules which are being handled by other, more technically capable coaches. Since the U18 seasons are not exceptionally long or demanding, give the players a "Heavy" workload on a schedule tailored to the necessary skillset for their position (use commong sense: i.e. Defenders should have HIGH Defense, Tactics and Ball Control, but Attack is not that important). If you start to notice a lot of injuries then scale back the workload or get better physios.

NOTE: AFTER THIS POINT YOU SHOULD BEGIN TRAINING YOUTH PLAYERS HEAVILY DURING THE OFFSEASON

AGE 18-20: By this point players have graduated from the youth academy and are probably in the reserve squad. Most of these players will probably not be ready to crack the senior squad, so this is when you should start trying to loan them out. Get feeder clubs or simply list them for loan and offer them to clubs. When offers come in, PAY ATTENTION to what they say and the caliber of team making the offer. You want to send players somewhere that they will actually play, so first look for teams which say the player will become a "valuable member of the first team". If all of the offers suggest that the player will be a backup then see which of the clubs has the least talent and depth at that player's position in order to maximize potential playing time. Loan them out for several seasons, ideally to teams in your country or those in leagues

For players in this age group who you are unable to loan out, leave them in the reserves and give them a slightly 'Heavy' fulltime training schedule.

For players who show enough promise at this age to get the occasional run-out, move to your senior training schedules and tutor as before. Bring them as subs for bigger games, and give them an odd start against minnows.

Even if a player looks good enough to start every game for your team at age 18, it's probably not a good idea. Playing them too often or playing them frequently against vastly superior opposition is likely to cause them to flame-out.

AGE 21-22: By this point players have usually gained as much as they can from tutoring, and will not benefit from sitting on the bench at a loan club. If you loan them, it should only be with assurance that they will be playing first-team football. Otherwise keep them in your senior squad and begin to slowly integrate them into the team.

AGE 23: By this point players have generally developed almost as much as can be expected. A 1-point increase in important technical and mental stats can be expected, but little else will be gained. If they aren't a viable first team player by this point, it isn't going to happen.

NOTE:
In my mind, the biggest obstacle to successful development is being impatient. I think that people expect to buy a bright talent at 16 or seventeen and work him into their squad within a year. THESE TYPES OF PLAYERS COME ALONG ONCE IN A GENERATION. Give your youth players the time they need to mature. Nurture them, don't throw them into the first team too quickly, and give them appropriate tutoring and training, and you will be rewarded. If you don't want to wait 3-5 years for a promising young player to become good, then save your cash up and buy someone who is established.

I kept getting offers for John Fleck from Wigan. Ended up sending him there on loan - at the tender age of 17 and he came back twice the player he was when he left. Loaning is the way to go unless they're not going to get first team games.

I tried loaning out Henri Saivet after Arsenal and Real were after him. Nobody was interested in him for loan tho... i thought it was weird so tried it again and Watford said they'd have him... no chance i thought so now he's stuck in my back up team/reserves. Because of the lack of loan interest i feel he might not become the player i hoped he would become. Altho saying that he is still damn good so who knows

R-dizzle, why don't you send Saivet to one of your satellite clubs if no one else wants to pick him up for loan. That's what I ended up doing in my game as no one wanted him either. He came back as a player of whole different caliber.

Does 22 apply to all positions would you say? As each position hits their keep at different times? For example I have a keeper at the minute who supposedly will be awesome but is crap at 20 - if he's still useless in 2 years do I need to consider getting shot of him or do they get longer to develop?

I use 22 as a guide with all players. A GK in particular does tend to peak later than outfield players, but at 22 I feel I still have a good enough idea as to whether he's worth keeping.

Players don't have to be 1st team regulars by 22 as they can still improve, but they must at least be a good squad player by this point.
