Do what the other big clubs do when they need english talent, pillage west ham.
Anton is a very nice all-round defender who has the pace to keep up with a fair few strikers. Calum is a bit mediocre in comparison, but still good. If you're in your first season, Upson might still be useful for you, again has the speed you'll want. I've never bought any of these before (used them though) so I can't tell you what they'd set you back.
Outside of them, you've got Jagielka who has most of the key defender stats and some nice passing but is weak in the air. On the plus side, he's versatile, and shouldn't cost more than £7m.
There's Lescott, a more traditional center back with good aerial but is ever so slightly slower (might make a difference against pacey players who will take their shots quickly). He's also pricier, I've never seen him move cheaper than £10m.
Depending on the flexibility of the challenge, you could also go for Yobo, given his second nationality is English. He's by far the best out of the lot
imo, high technical and a physical beast to boot. He's a nigerian starter though, and I've yet to see an offer accepted for him (I've tried up to 12 at various times with no success).
Dawson is another good choice, but far too slow for my taste. Hope this helps.
