Hey guys. I'm not a newbie LLaMer, but I haven't been here for so long that I forgot my sign-in details Heh.
Anyway, I was just wondering how you guys select your very first team, considering that you almost certainly don't know any of the players.
Do you sift through the stats for hours, or just select a random person that can play each position and swap them around until you find out who plays well in which position, or what?
Sometimes, it's the case that you haven't got much choice, since there may only be one player that can play in each position (as in some of the Slovak clubs).
Personally, as stupid as it sounds, I choose the one with the coolest name :p
I've always beean a stat sifter, which is why it generally takes me half a season to find out that the sluggish old DC with stats of a golfer is actually the best player at the club.
By then he is probably on the transfer list and very unhappy with his manager
Usually a combination of stats, random and coach opinions
I look at stats first, especially positions where there are only a couple of players to pick from. If I join at the start of a season I then go to a more random method and play as many of them as possible in friendlies to see how they do. If I join in midseason, I tend to take a bit more notice of the coaches to start with as I don't have the preseason time to learn who is good. very seldomly I might have the AssMan tell me his preferred side.
I normally go by past history with the club, their games played and average rating.
If it's a new player, I look at how his wage fits in with the structure.
However, a new team is the only place (start of season) where I play about five or six friendlies, just so I get an idea of my players. I normally only play two or three.
I essentially go in with no preconceived notions and play everybody a few games before I get a feel on who should be staying on the first squad. This was very frustrating in the Slovak and Czech leagues as there cup competitions commence before the start of the regular season, so I was still trying to sort out a roster and ended up routinely losing to amateur sides. It can easily take a half a season before I am comfortable with my starting 11.

I don't often have enough players that it owuld take me hours to sift through the stats.
I'll generally start with the players who are strongest stat-wise overall, and if they're carp just try anyone else who looks even barely adequate.
Injuries and suspensions play a key part too, expecially when you have to field players out of position.
Pre-season friendlys bring much random chopping and changing, those that impress straight off get a run of games to prove their worth. Some is done by looking at stats, some are just random shots in the dark.
