Sonnet - a definition
A lyric poem of fourteen lines, following one or another of several set rhyme-schemes. The two characteristic sonnet types are the Italian (Petrarchan) and the English (Shakespearean). The first, the Italian form, is distinguished by its bipartite division into the octave and the sestet: the octave consisting of a first division of eight lines rhyming thus 'abbaabba' and the sestet, or second division, consisting of six lines rhyming either 'cdecde', 'cdccdc', or 'cdedce'. The English (Shakespearean) sonnet, on the other hand, is so different from the Italian (though it grew from that form) as to permit of a separate classification. Instead of the octave and sestet divisions, this sonnet characteristically embodies four divisions: three quatrains (each with a rhyme-scheme of its own) and a rhymed couplet. Typically with the rhyming lines arranged thus 'abab cdcd efef gg'.
Haiku - a definition
Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional japanese poetry. Haiku is, today, a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables.
That should make it easy for everyone to understand, even those for whom English is not their first language.
