In a fairly uneventful first half-season - from December to May 2012 - we managed to avoid relegation, planted firmly in the bottom six after the split and finishing 9th with a P38, W12, D13, L13 record.

In the close season we had a few youths promoted to the U-19's squad, one, a DMRC, rated as a very good prospect by my trusty AssMan.

We signed an AMLC from Millwall on a freedom of contract for £1.2m and that FRC who's been with me at East Stirlingshire, Blackburn and Dundee United joined us for £3m at Tynecastle.

We also got a couple of DC's on free's.

The Canadian stalwart got Fans' Player of the Year and is still starting most of the games for us at the grand old age of 33.

I reckon this season will be one of consolidation, the Board and Fans expect European Qualification, and when the U-19's get a bit tougher we'll probably be looking at challenging the Auld Firm for at least second spot.

Into November now and comfortably in the top six.

It all went a bit better than consolidation this season, finishing as we did above both Rangers and Celtic.

Then again, so did East Stirlingshire and Ayr United.

Third place it was, a creditable effort, and this was iced on the cake of good fortune by the Uefa Cup Final appearance against Lazio - who gave us a right royal reaming!

1st Division Motherwell had put paid to our domestic cup inte...well...apathy, to be honest, having put us out of the League Cup and the Scottish Cup early on.

We signed a couple of youngsters on loan for the season, one a DL who performed so well that we bought him for £450k at the end of the period. An ageing Icelandic guy came on board, as did an old Scottish DC and a young SC from Dunfermline.

We kinda had to sign the Dunfermline SC as he seemed to make it his role in life to score against us.

At the beginning of the season there were 10 current Hearts players in the squad. 4 have retired and one was released (one of the retirées the Canadian D/SC), two are in the reserves and three are occasional starters for the first team.

Item of amusement. The Icelandic guy took me aside at training to tell me he'd been successful in taking his coaches ticket, so I offered him a new contract as a player/coach.

He informed me Bill Gates couldn't afford to pay him what it'd take for him to sign a new contract at Hearts

Strange fella....

We've promoted a player to a coaching position (not the iceman) and signed a young FL/C on loan. We've bought a goalie and signed three guys on frees, one of whom looks a find.

...AND that's a young FC just signed, last signing of this window, apparently I had him at East Stirlingshire as a 14y/o.

Bah Ian, why buy the fecka? You could have just loaned him for half the fee and retrained him into a DL and never give him a match and put him on a training schedule that makes him only run run run until he pukes.

Oh, and I'm not sadistic. I just love those players who always score against me.

I got into a nice, easy Champions' League Group with my 3rd qualifying round success, btw. Shakhtar, Arsenal and Real Madrid

Seems like Shakhtar are the most difficult opponents in the group. Real Madrid is like a cup.

Did I mention that I had 4 games in charge of South Korea in the Asian Nations Cup last season? They sacked me then offered me the job after a few days
