I'm not quite sure, i guess it depends on the country you're playing in. I.e, the status doesn't change in Wales (nor in Scotland, IIRC) but it does in England. There are bound to be some players that will be willing to join an amateur club, so give it a go and tell us how it goes

Amateur clubs can still offer wages to players, don't fear that you'll have to reward them with personal favours or so.
