I selected Castellon in Spanish 2nd Division B3 as the starting point for a new career game. The criteria being they were alphabetically the first side in the Second Division B without a manager.
I am not sure if I should have started in B4, but I will learn the Spanish structure as I go.
The season started disastrously with my imposition of an uncompromising basic playing method not producing results on the pitch. I persevered, and by mid-season Castellon had achieved a respectable mid-table position.
The second half of the season will be tough as the three highest wage earners, and unfortunately best players have been sacrificed for financial reasons. Unfortunately I have not been able to recoup their true value, so will probably only have funds to bolster the defence in the transfer window.
Spanish Second Division B is formed by four groups of 20 teams. The Top 4 Ending teams get to a promotion playoff and the four last placed ones get relegated. The fifth last placed team of each group gets into a playout cup... (Thought you'd like some info about what you'd got yourself into )
Just witnessed the play-offs (as a spectator), so have an idea what is required next season. The stadium is not 20% full, so I guess you must be refering to ground maintenance, which is affordable at present.
Season 03/04 ended with Castellon in 7th place. The improved defence did no more than off-set the loss of the high earning "stars" allowing maintenance of the form that dragged the team of the bottom.
The board and the fans are pleased with progress so far, and I am cautiously optimistic. The signing of a lethal striker may improve matters next season.
The second season started much the same as the first, disastrously. This season Catellon appear to have some firepower, however the defence has looked anything but secure despite making no major changes from last season.
Castellon improved to second by mid-season, however lack of squad depth may prove critical in the run-in. The team are inconsistent, but certainly not boring, unfortunately the goals fly in at both ends.
There has been little success in the transfer window with regard to improving the team for the second half of the season, but a few decent free transfers have been secured for next term.
Castellon became consistent in the second half of the season. The team could not win a game for two months, dropping to 6th place, then an inspired run-in left us in 2nd place with a match to go. Unfortunately defeat in the last game (away to champions, Valencia B) meant 6th place. Jordi may be able to explain why goal difference has little relevance in this league, but Castellon were a point short of the play-offs as well.
The board and supporters are delighted with progress, but the reality is the players are aging, and the board has little ambition e.g. will not improve training facilities even with £2.2M in the bank.
Interesting to see next season's expectations and transfer funds.
The board and the supporters are happy with another mid-table finish this season. A generous £450k has been allocated for transfers, which may come in handy.
The free transfers (13) have tipped the balance with regard to the wage budget, however a few older and poorer players will be sent on their way to balance the books. £110K was invested in upgrading the goalkeeper to a classier model.
The season started reasonably well and at the halfway point, Castellon hold third position. The B teams of Malaga and Valencia are forging ahead, and dropping few points. There is genuine optimism for the play-offs as there is an 11 point cushion to 5th place.
Castellon improved steadily through the season and eventually finished second behind Malaga "B".
A cup run proved a distraction from the hard work in the league, and losing to Real Madrid in the Semi-Final by the odd goal in nine (over two legs) does not begin to tell the story.
The play-offs looked a difficult proposition with the top four teams in each of the four divisions split into groups, with only the group winners being promoted. Promotion was achieved with one game left to go, and the board have agreed to upgrade the training facilities at the 6th time of asking.
We are now into July with one game still left (probably use it as a pre-season friendly). Just hope that a few of the shortlisted players are released to allow the squad to be strengthened to survive Division 2.
The big turning point has been to stop conceding goals (for no apparent reason), admittedly the team are not as prolific as last season.
I am enjoying managing Castellon, and their appears to be plenty of growth from the current position. The clubs finances are in an excellent position, maybe too good for genuine LLM, from the beginning of the game.
All spanish sides except two or three are too good (economywise) for true LLM, PAFC...
It's only with the promotion of new sides that you get some teams with appropiate finances (and of course the div 2B sides also get in a more acurate state once five or six seasons have been elapsed)
