So i've been managing Maidenhead United with extra players from the UK & Ireland, and i've found a good Irish defender (without a contract !)for Maidenhead (at least according to my scout), so i offer him a trial and my staff is enthousiastic about him so i sign him. Now the problem is that this occured in August 2007 and when i sign him, the news report states that he'll come to my club at 5-7-2008. I thought that if you sign a free player, he would join the club immediatley instead of june 2008. Is this because of any Irish regulations ?

btw: i'm using the 8.0.0 database with the first patch installed. And i don't want to be a nag or something like that , but is there any news about a second patch. oh yea , lost the savegame.

It could be OK.

You just approached the player, you should approach the club and offer them zero money.

If the team and player accepted, he’s yours right a way.

Or

Maybe your Irish defender already signed a contract in 2007 with his previous club. Even for free, a player can’t sign 2 contracts a year. That’s why he has to wait till the end of the current season.

Solution?

Loan him till the end of the season and when he is joining your club offer him to sign him for free.

There is a rule that a player can't sign for two clubs in the same year. I've often been told this on the contract offer page.
I've never seen it on a free though, although I can imagine why it may have come about, e.g. signed by a manager who left/got sacked and wasn't wanted by the new guy, released by administrators etc.

I think soundian is right here. It should have said when offering him a contract that he can't move more than once in a year. However, I'm not sure how this rule works with free transfers? If he was released from Maidenhead, he would probably have come right away.

The player in question was 15 years and was a free player at the start of the July 2007 transfer window.
And he didn't play at Maidenhead before. I just took him on trial first and then I decided to sign him.
