I play lower leagues and usually send out my three scouts around England to find some good players, checking their reports once every three or four days, keeps me a little busy..
I always look around for young players who look promising and are coming to the end of the contract. Any I consider promising enough, I will try and sign.
I usually go through all the Under 18 players to see how they have performed and whether or not they have progressed and release the ones not up to standard. In theory this should give you a wider selection when the new batch come through as I presume the more in the squad already, the less come through.
Other than that a similiar thing with the reserves, see if any are ready for first team or need moving on. Try to offload the deadwood and have a think about what you need to strengthen in the team.
Other than that organise all of your pre season friendlies early, scout any major international tournaments going on.

I would never of thought of that. I always keep hold of the youth players, and see what happens over time, tend to bring in from outside more often than looking at the youth team.
