In the manual and, if my memory serves, amongst M.Vaughans hints and tips. it is generally advised to use closing down cautiously. The exceptions being one striker and both wide midfielders. Possibly both full backs closing down opposition wingers. But these guides do not state how much too close down.
I have generally used closing down on 3-6 for the full backs and CDs, so that they will not be caught out of position. My two wide players and one striker are on 12-14. I also only close down in my own half.
Now, in nearly all of the tactics that I have seen, all closing down is on at least 14. What I should like to know is which are the correct settings for closing down? Or are both correct and why?
MV doesn't say keep closing down low. What he does say is that using it excessively can tire players down. Personally speaking I tend to mix it up. There are reasons why.
Upfront in attack I tend to have all my strikers on closing down of 14-20. They need to close down the defenders quickly and prevent the AI from building up slowly from the back. Having said that, its important to note that you need players with determination and a high work rate to do this as well. Training schedules need to incorporate some level of fitness training. In order to make this successful you need to ensure that your player fitness levels are high.
There is a thread i worked a while back where I introduced a template called Wolverine, in it I explained why I had different kinds of closing down. My fullbacks tend to close down at around 14-16, but my wingers are told to stand off till players enter their zone with a CD of around 8-10. In the centre of the park, if I have 2 MCs, one will close down high and the other will be equal to the 2 DCs who will have around 6 for CD.
Is there a right way and wrong way. Yes. When setting up your CD you just need to make sure that when you don't have the ball, you don't allow yourself to be pulled apart.

so you don`t use even more low cd for both MCs?
And which one has low cd, then more defensivly to hold position, correct? At last what with fwr for both mcs?thanx
If I play with a high defensive line, then my back four closes down at first notch of often, and the rest of the team on normal. (obviously: you need GOOD defenders---pace and positioning are a must).
If a play with a deep defensive line, then 1 central midfielder, one winger (the one who has better work rate) and one striker are set to close down at first notch of often, the rest of the team on normal.
