I started a new game with my beloved Parma who are rated pretty poorly for the 2007/2008 season. 2/3 of the season finished and I am only 2 points off the relegation zone, that with Reggina, Lazio and fiorentina having more than 10 points penalties.

I've tried all sorts, default formations, custom, you name it I tried it but nothing seems to work.

I decided to quit the game eventually when I instructed my keeper to pass the ball to my DC with 17 passing and set him on low creativity and short passing. So what does he do for the next 5-6 games?! Hoof the ball to the target man every bloody time!

I've played this game for over 10 years but surely this is urine extraction at its best.

One thing I haven't tried is set my nationality to Italian even though I'm not. Perhaps the language barrier effects player instructions but does it really take a supposedly intelligent keeper playing Seria A over 6 games to understand the simple fact that I want him to play short balls to the DC?!

Incredible... I've almost had enough of this game.. almost, maybe one more try

If you don't want them to hoof the ball forward why are you playing with a target man?

Since when does using a target man mean hoofing the ball 30 yards up field every time?!

My target man has good pace, fist touch and off the ball attributes so I have my supply set to to feet or sometimes run on to the ball.

I don't play long passing, heck I don't even play direct passing and as I said, my keeper is instructed to pass the ball to my defender with the best passing attribute.

Still, he carries on taking long kicks EVERY single time.

How quick is your tempo?

Also, does he have a viable option to pass to in defence? I've noticed the major problem in getting a goalie to play short is a lack of options. If there's nobody obviously open he'll punt it as far as he can, or onto the head of the strikers.

It's stupid that "defender collect" doens't force the full backs back to a passing position like it should. You could try specifically telling him to distribute to the left back or right back and see if it helps any.

Remember that passing is not just about how far you pass the ball, but also who you have the option of passing to. This is especially true for defenders, who tend to be on low creative freedom and defensive mentality. If they're put under ANY preassure, they'll boot it up the field. Would you rather him send it short to (the wrong) striker and give the ball away?
