No no no... He wants them close together (so narrow), but "sliding" across the pitch, so when being attacked on the left, there's the left back right on the touchline, centerbacks either side of the penalty area line and the right back aroudn the center circle, ditto when being attacked down the right.
It'd be vulenrable to quick changes in flank, but shouldn't be outnumbered onthe flanks as such.
The problem with this is that in football the ball can be switched very quickly from one side of the pitch to the other with one pass. Were as in rugby it normally takes several passes which is why this sliding approach is more suited to rugby.
OK if I've interpreted this post correctly then here is what I would suggest:
If you are using a 4-4-2:
This is assuming you have a left back and right back. What I would recommend would be to set the individual player instructions for these two players to Defensive and to increase closing down to high. Also make sure you set forward runs down to rarely. I originally had your problem, although I didn't use narrow width but I was continually a victim of crosses. By using this setting this has greatly improved my team's defensive capabilities in terms of dealing with crosses. Also, another option would be just before the game assign the left back and right back to the opponents wingers under opposition instructions with exactly what you want them to do. This could also be of benefit.
This would actually apply with any formation with a flat back four.
Another alternative is that you try a different formation. You could employ a 5-3-2 with wing-backs which not only gives you cover on the flanks but also gives you a 3 man central defence. It would also grant a narrow 3 man midfield.
I'd like to know what other people thought of my suggestions though before you commit yourself. One of the main reasons I concede so few from crosses is I have big central defenders who are strong and with a very good marking and heading skill - this would probably help too.
