Granted that I have a very good team, thus this is easier to achieve, but my tactics have been based on the AI flaws and my interpretation of how the analasys made so far.
I have found the midfield to be rather ineffective when playing vs an opponent which is the underdog, most teams are at my current club. The throughballs seem intercepted very often by even the most poor defenders giving very fast strikers a hard time, especially if these are poor on strength and lack aerial attributes .. examples could be Palacio or Bellamy ( both are very good on counter attacking though).
Giving the defenders strength and the reduced efficiency of longshots compared to FM06 I decided to totally open up my midfield.
1 Goalkeeper
2 center backs
2 Wingbacks (arrows up or down)and a DMC (arrow down).
Midfield is empty.
2 wingers (arrows up or down) 1 static AMC
2 Forwards.
............GK............
.......DC.........DC......
WB..........DMC.........WB
..........................
AMR.........AMC........AML
.......FC.......ST........
The DMC binds the team, he needs to be fast and strong defender, without it this tactic will fall apart. The long diagonal crosses are usually handled by either the wingbacks or the central defenders, since the DMC drops back the central defenders will go a bit wider to cover the opponents wingers.
Both wingbacks are set to man and tight marking, this means they will drop to cover their centerforwards if the opponent doesnt employ offensive wingers which is handy, your centerbacks are now able to concentrate on either midfielders or acting as backup to failures from the wingbacks.
Attacking wise you need a strong and preferably fast "towerstriker", fast is not necessary. The style of play is very direct, you are bypassing anything called midfield and its a big plus ofcourse if you have some strong wingers with aerial abilities. If you dont your targetman will often find your wingers in free positions anyway.
This tactic needs a lot of creative freedom from the offensive 5, but I have been successfully at employing players with high workrate and low mental attributes .. so I am not sure about the stats required here, but speed is ofcourse nice.
The arrows are back to wingers and fullbacks if I am "awaiting" and forward for wingers at home. The fullbacks usually always have their arrows back.
The mentality is a bit attacking for everyone, defending a bit deep, a bit wide formation with normal tackling all the way.
I am not saving my tactic and posting it since I seem to suffer from supersticion in regard to FM, everytime I save a tactic it stops working .. its probably coincidence but I am not saving my tactic .. call me a moron .
I do not suggest trying this with poor teams. But give it a go at a new game, tweak a bit around in regard to the various aspects of mentality etc.
PS: At home I play offside against underdogs, NO MAN MARKING for CDs .. they get pulled out of position. .. You should actually also let your centerbacks stay home at all times .. at least thats what I do.
This post is merely inspirational to give you a few ideas to experiment with, as said I am in my 5th season with Liverpool and my squad is pretty much worldclass all over the pitch.

If you regard ballpossession as important dont even try this, its about waiting for a mistake ... a long ball up .. and goal. It scores loads of countergoals without actually having counterattack ticked on.

You put a lot of emphasis on "no midfield" and credited your tactic to loopholes and whatnot. The shape is actually good, employing a 5 defense, 5-attack philosophy, which can double up in attack due to your wingbaacks. You do have a midfield, by the way. Defensive Midfield, Attacking midfield, etc. You're just employing it in a way that looks to avoid the opposition's midfield.

yeah using this type of formation, I've noticed that opponents tend to have lots of space in midfield to unleash screamers from outside the box.. tried making the dmc close down a lot more, but without much success..
