before every match my scout tells me that the team played a defensive 4-4-2 and looked to counter attack. This seems funny especially when i am playing arsenal after they have played sheffield but it also says that they played pocession football and like to get the ball down and play it. I thought that this was contradictory in its self as it is better to play quick direct football when counter attacking.
Basically, I have three options:

Go attacking to counter the defensive approach
Play direct and quick to counter their passing style
match their tacics by playing defensive, CA and short passing

When playing against a team how am i supposed to counter them without getting torn apart?
When i am not favourite for the game (against arsenal) why would i go attacking to counter their defense as i would be killed.
Any advice would be appreciated because i as i say, i face this dilemma every single game, btw i play as watford
As you are playing as Watford and you are playing Arsenal the first thing you must realise it that you are not going to be favourite.
Arsenal have the better quality players and reputation to ensure that they will always outclass your team in a technical game.
What you need to do it to identify what your teams strengths are.
You do this by looking at the stats of the players in your squad. You also need to know what stats relate to what aspect of tactics and then choose the style of play that maximises your teams strenghs and hopefully will counter some of the opposition play.
Are you playing home or away? I believe this has an important role in choosing tactics.
This probably isn't what you want to here but it is what I believe to be the best route to getting a result, 1-1 away to Arsenal would be a good result in my opinion.
i appreciate your reply but i don't think i explained well enough my problem. My problem is the fact my scout says that every team will play the same against me whether they are arsenal or sheffield. i know that i am not favourites against arsenal but why do they play exactly the same style of football as sheffield who i am supposed to beat?
Why would arsenal look to draw me onto them and then counter me when they are the clear favourites and so should surely be looking to probe me with attacking fooball. Finally, if they do intend to play counter attacking football then why would they choose slow, short passing when quuickdirect is much more counter attacking friendly?

Looking at it from the other angle what does Wenger or even Warnock see when they play Watford.
A team that will maximise there success if they play the direct high tempo game. Watford also have the option of parking a bus infront of the goal.
By attacking you they are suceptable to your direct game and could be caught out on the break.
Playing the counter attacking football and the short game will work for them as they have the quality to get goals from their flair players and by keeping possesion. The counter is to exploit the difference in the stats of your defence and their front line.
They would not risk attacking too hard, they dont need to, if you give they give you enough rope you my just hang yourself.
I was having the same issues. If the scout says that the opposition will play def CA you then play with a Normal mentality. I would also play 2 or 3 clicks into direct and tempo. Do not also play CA unless you are winning then look out for messages saying that Arsenal are looking to attack. If this happens use def mentality and CA.
After playing like this for a few games you will notice that the scout reports change.
