Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Tactics for average / poor sides

Since the game came out, I've been playing as a number of big clubs, and am fairly happy with the tactics I use for those games, as I have enjoyed a lot of success.

Now I thought it was time to move on to a greater challenge. I have since played a few games with smaller clubs, or clubs which are fairly poor for their division, and I can't find any tactics that work.

My most recent game is as Sheff Wed. Media prediction in first season 18th. Both board & fans want mid table. I woudl quite like play-offs or top 10.

It all starts quite nicely, I win 1-0 away at Palace, although I rob them as they have a lot of the play, and most of the chances. Next game I win 5-1 home to Norwich, with a great performance, then another 1-0 away win, this time at Birmingham. So far so good!

Unfortunately, it then all goes wrong, and I lose the next 4 games, before drawing 2 and then losing another 4. This sets the pattern for the next few months and my form is rubbish!

Does anyone have any help or advice?

I have done pretty much the same. Playing as Torquay I won my first 2 games and drew the next before losing 9 in a row (including the League Cup first round against Plymouth.) I found that away from home I was getting beaten more heavily than at home so I tried playing a more defensive counter-attacking style and I conceded fewer goals, but can't score cos I have a useless team.

Try setting the 'closing down' to 'often' and get the strikers to run with the ball - at least this helps to retain posession. Another method which I've tried and it has worked occasionally is to release a media statement saying that one of the opposition players will be a threat to you in the forthcoming game, it puts pressure on them and sometimes they don't perform. Hope that helps.

Hate to say it TorquayGaffer but Torquay are a genuinely bad team . However as my Lincoln side I've tried all manner of different things and finally found one that works, which to my total surprise was a bog standard boring 4-4-2. Just make sure you get a good fast striker and then play slightly defensive and use the pacey striker as a target man with instructions to run onto the ball. See if that helps...
