-Stick to a back 4.
-Back arrows on the RB/LB help cutout crosses (but cost u a little offensive power also).
-Zonal + Tight marking works well generally
-Man + NOT tight work well if you've got decent defenders.
But in this game, don't your fullbacks get lapped by opposing wingers all the time (despite the instructions)? This effectively means that the purpose of having a back 4 which is to counter wingers is not accomplished very well, so 3 DC'S (SW as well)is a way to go.
For this reason i always use 3 defenders with defensive MRL. as long as i have 3 (or 4 if i have a DMC) back at all times the odds are in my favour against crosses.
They are enough IMO. I always play very attacking, home or away, and usually have 3 at the back, 2 DMs, a CM, an AMR and AML and 2 forwards. The RCB and LCB have RArrows and LArrows and the 2 DCMs have team mentality (about 3/4 attacking) whilst all 3 defenders have about 3/4 defensive mentality.

I don't find that at all, but I also like my wingers to help out in defensive duties to give them a little extra cover anyway. I'd be doing that if I were playing three at the back as well, probably more so.
Whenever I play with three central defenders, I end up being forced to play defensive wingers anyway, so it ends up being a 5-3-2 which is fun but not really that attack minded.
