a reliable and strongly defensive, counter-attacking strategy which i'm currently using with Blackpool and doing quite well is a 5-3-2 formation using your right/left backs as wing-backs too. So they push up on the counter-attack. With 3 central midfielders and obviously your 2 strikers.
It's quite flexible, you can play more defensive, or attacking if needed, and you can sub striker to have an extra midfielder, 5-4-1 if you are looking to hold onto a good lead.
Will take a while for your team to adjust, when i originally changed blackpool onto it, it took about a month or so to start getting goals. In the meantime it is still a good defensive formation and managed not to concede too many. After the first month i went into championship playoff places and stayed there till the last few weeks of the season.
