Off the ball stats are at 19 but I didn't think they were "as" important.
Why then is this player so good on my game? I realise these stats are pretty good, but nearly as good as some other players I have tried in the game (other have 19s and 20s for these attributes). I'd really like to know so that I can replace him (eventually) with a similar player.
There are a few other positions I am now questioning also because some of the Barzagli attributes are not as high as I thought they should be (bravery and strength) and yet he is easily the best defender in La Liga (even better than Puyol).

The 5 attributes ( not stats ) that you quote, along with off the ball are the 6 attributes that SI have said in their tips that are impostant for an AMR/L. Given that 16 is the base/average attribute number for a top class international player then it is not surprising that your player is good. Some of his hidden and physical/mental attributes may make him better that those players with the same attributes

I think people underestimate determination and decisions. They are rarely discussed, but I have some players who rate higher than others on a regular basis when their technical stats are worse but have higher determination.

There are other hidden stats which determine how good a player is. For eg, you talk of Rosina. Put him in a big match and he mostly come up trumps for you because his "important matches" stat is at maximum (100). Also, determination, decisions, work-rate etc etc all contribute towards a player being very good. A player could have maximum in ALL the technical stats but if he's got (say) low determination, decisions, composure, work rate etc he'll probably be an average player. When he plays well, he'll destroy anyone but it wont happen too happen.
Btw, Rosina is a brilliant player and it's no surprise that he's doing well in your game.

You mention the hidden stats and I agree with you. But it just shows how important these are and yet I think I am right in saying that these don't appear (or aren't even hinted at) in the scouting !?!
The issue I have is how to identify the right attributes for someone to replace him eventually.
backpackant: You may be right about this. For determination he has 20 and for decisions he has a 15.
It just seems that he is much (much much) better than 'similar' players but these certain attributes must make an enormous difference. In fact, instead of looking for (and being impressed by) 19s and 20s for the technical and physical stats, I should perhaps settle for 15s, 16s and 17s but get higher mental attributes.
Has anyone noticed a difference in the weighting of these mental attributes in this version or have I been missing out on this for a while?

They are depending on how good your scout is and depending on the player. They'd tell something like "the player is a consistent performer" or "fairly consistent performer" or "very consistent performer" or even all those 3 with 'inconsistent' instead of consistent. Sometimes they also tell you about the big matches in "player relishes the big occasions" or "doesnt relish the big occasions". Eg, if you scout Lahm or Alves, you'll probably get "very consistent performer" from the scout. So you do get hints for some of these players. Its not always mentioned though.
The thing is that if you read all the scout reports properly and then look at the player stats, you can make an informed decision about how good he'll be. Rosina's determination along with a scout report of "relishes big occasions" would tell me that he'll play well most of the time if given the right motivation to do so. AND if your team is say a goal down, he'll be one of the guys who'll bust a gut to try and win you the game. Something like you see irl with Steven Gerrard most notably. If you watch Arsenal, you'll note it in Adebayor in big matches. This season he's been consistent in all games but last season he really shone through against the bigger, tougher opponents (ask Man Utd!).
