Following 6 months without CM, I decided to load up good old CM 01/02.
After following jraldous’ thread a year or so ago about his exploits in Brazil, I was inspired to do the same, and present you with another update thread. :hmm:
Clube Atlético do Porto are the chosen club, chairman-less but with a decent 130k in the kitty, 21 players and a 6000 person stadium. Ooh, and top facilites with a youth academy… nice!
The Brazilian system is split into 2 stages, first up are the regional tournaments followed by the nationals. We are entered into the Pernambuco championships along side 2 division 1 teams, one division 2 team and the rest non-leaguers. With four berths to go into the next stage we find ourselves with a very good shot.
First off though, I went through the squad and sold most of the expensive players to generate a little more moula. 12 of the 21 were to be sold before the season started, with 7 decent faces joining 3 loanees on the way in.
I then decided to spend pretty much all of the money I had made (425k) on a D R/L with 3 Brazil caps to his name. Looks good so far but a hell of a lot of money!
Oops - had to go out and play 5-a-side. We lost 33-32
Anyway... first half season went pretty well tbh, despite losing my star player for 4 months after only his 4th game. The two strikers on loan did very well, and with a free scoring DM (!) we managed to rack up a few surprise wins – most notably home and away over Sport Recife, the giants of the league (the only two games they lost). We also dumped Santos and Santa Cruz out the cup, both higher league team, before losing to Bahia.
Finished a tidy second in the league on goal difference, but went out in the next stage (play-off semi finals).
Sold my star left back for 750k (they’re hard to come by!) and then threw 500k at a 45k rated 18y/o right back. Again mebbe a bit crazy, although he seems very good and I desperately needed one.
Nationals up next – only 7 teams in the league with two up and two down. So only three will stay for the next season. Some fairly good teams in there, only asked to battle bravely against relegation but I’ve put together a fairly good squad since the board told me that 6 months ago. We’ll see how it goes
Ooh, hang on, update in a minute, just got a youth player through (my favourite bit in the game!)...
Cool a centre forward, and he's wanted by first division clubs before I've even had the chance to offer a contract.
Anyway, the second half of season 1:
...went very well! Suprisingly we were easily the best team in the division, only dropping 4 points from our 12 games.
Next we met the complicated second phase, I had a look at the schedule, but that gave me no further clue. Just try and win I s'pose!
We would face Madureira, who fielded no less that 9 on loan players in there starting XI! Despite a 2-2 draw at home, and big 3-0 away win was enough to see us into the 'thrid round', where it appeared we had to finish in the top two of a group of four to gain promotion.
And that's exactly what we did. Lost to the group winners home and away but won the rest to book our place in the second division for next season!
My DMC finished top scorer with an incredible 18 goals in 43 appearances. And couple of key loans on the left and up front also helped considerably, and with a few players leaving, Corinthians (AL) managed to con me out of 500k for a 50k rated 18y/o right back. He looks the dogs danglies though, and has been made skipper for the season ahead.
Pre-season 2:
I had done my scouting well last season, and the 8 bosmans I had arranged to sign began to join after the transfer window had opened. 5 of them are DMCs but I'm sure I'll be able to squeeze them in somewhere.
Looking through my transfers out though, I realised I had sold all but 2 of the original 21 man squad after just a year in charge, something I very rarely do.
With only 2 forwards I have loaned in 3 youngsters from top flight teams who all look fb.
Last season I couldn't loan anyone I wanted as my Italian nationality and unproven manager status meant teams rejected me even though their players were listed, while all the clubs around me pulled in big names on the fringe of some of Brazilian giants squads.
Anyway, onto the Pernambuco Championships again then where first division teams Sport Recife and Santa Cruz will again be the favourites.
