Been through the rules but as i'm stuck with the 99/00 version of the game.
As a start i've set up a game with the Swedish, British, Morwegian, Danish and Scottish Leagues and i've picked a little small town Swedish 2nd division club by the name of Robertsfors IK.
My main query is over my scouting area, what would qualify as an acceptable scouting region.
At the moment I am using a guideline of just Sweden, England (as a lot of English players play in Sweden IRL), Norway, and a Middle East search (as my random manager nationality was Yemen for this game). I'm wondering if there are other leagues it would be suitable to scout.
Have escaped a predicted relegation first season using a mostly swedish squad, plus a South African striker who was plying his way in the lower leagues of England, and an Iranian I managed to persuade over with my meagre 2k transfer budget after a couple of scouting visits. Went into the last game of the season with 2 points seperating 5th and 10th, and a draw saw me safely inot another season.
I'm now looking to build my squad up for a second season and push for top half, but wanted to keep within the LLM guidelines and wanted to check whether i'm doing this right or not.
Would be glad if someone could point me in the right direction.
I tend to keep pretty much to the country itself when the team I am managing is right at the bottom level, then broaden it a little when they've moved up a bit. I wouldn't go any further than Scandanavia for a Swedish team.
I'm not sure where I stand on the 'scout your country of origin idea', but I tend to use the nationality of the country I'm going to start in, so it doesn't really come up.
At the end of the day though, it's your choice what you feel to be the most realistic way to play.
 A newbie who has actually read the guidelines
I start like Cobbler - search the country I'm in exclusively before moving up to neighbouring countries. I often don't even scout Jockland or Sheepshaggerland in a Poofland game until a couple of seasons in.
I suppose the country of origin scouting is acceptable, although a Swedish team scouting the middle east seems a bit odd, tbh. I'd tend toward using the UK instead based on your RL observation, but only if you can afford it.
I'd say you should scout Finland instead of England, both considering the Swedish-Finnish history and the fact that a lot more Finns than English play in the Swedish laegues.

I tend to use SYB or SWYCT (or both). With the nationality you've chosen, I suppose it's more a case of 'How good are your finances'?
If your team is rolling in the moolah, feel free to send one of your scouts off to trek around the Middle East, finding lots of Saudi players who you won't be able to sign.
If, however, you have a typical LL team and have to fine the tea-lady when she turns up late for work to balance the books, I'd recommend holding off on it for a while.
But, it's your game, you do whatever you feel is reasonable.
What turnip said. I stick closely to scouting the region I'm playing in at first, then by the time I have a couple of million in the bank I'll send the scouts across Europe. Then once the club reaches the Secure/Rich status, send them further afield.
The one flaw I find with SWYCT is that if you're playing in minor leagues (e.g.Wales, Finland) it never lets you tour very far away, even when you've built up vast cash reserves of £40M+ and are in the CL group stages every other year. SWYCT is perfect in the major European leagues though.
