When I look to sign free transfers I either offer a trial, scout them or both. However sometimes when I offer a trial I get no reply from the player, not even a rejection just nothing.

Have any of you guys experienced this?

I've also noticed it taking half of forever for a player to turn me down, trial-wise.
If they accept a contract offer from another club in the meantime, you won't hear from them. Check the 'News' screen to see if this has happened.
