I can partly agree to that. But I think it's assumable that religion will play a bigger part in a country's politics as the inhabitants of that country are more religious but only if there is a strong correlation in the beliefs of the people.

The ideal, Freedom of Religion & Seperation of Church and State, country would have every inhabitant worshipping a different religion.

I saw a good documentary the other day on the Bush administration and religion. Basically Bush "won" the last election on the strength of evangelical votes. by winning over the religious right he won the white house.

One of the reasons for this is that voting in the US is not compulsory therefore people who are undecided or do not have a strong opinion or are apathetic do not vote. Therefore there is a better chance for people with collective views to influence the election if they vote as a bloc.

Another factor is the use of fear in election campaigns and during times of uncertainty people are less likely to vote the government out due to fear of change in uncertain times. I think the opinion polls reflect this. It was certainly the case with the recent elections in Australia.
