One of my players was sent off due to a late tackle in a friendly reserve match against a foreign team. Subsequently the FA banned him for the next 3 first team league matches (this never came up as a news item and I didn't have the option of disciplining the player or appealing the verdict). Now my question is: Do red cards in friendly matches really result in suspensions in England? Seems very harsh as it wasn't a case of premeditated violence.

It can happen at the referee's discrestion iirc

No it can't!

The referee doesn't decide suspensions, ever! All he does it report the incident, and the FA or competition committee decide what to do with the player.

Yes it happens, remember Eric Cantona serving a suspension for it a few years back. Possibly Rooney too.

I think what Shankley means is that the ref can choose to report him to the FA.

Bit more concerned you got no message about it after the match. Possible bug or you just missed it by mistake.

If you're sent off in a reserve match or a friendly then the suspension will count in league games.
